POLO
CAMBRIDGE TEAM FOR SAVILE CUP
THREE YOUNG PLAYERS INCLUDED
Reports of recent polo matches in the North Island show that the Cambridge Club team which won the Savile Cup at Feilding last year is showing an improvement on the form which it showed then. The cup will be competed for at Christchurch on April 15 and it is probable that only Christchurch and Cambridge will contest it. Last year the Cambridge Club won the Cameron Cup (competed for among North Island clubs) from Te Awamutu early in the'* season, and later withstood challenges from Matamata Matangi. This year the club has defeated all challenges so far. Clubs which it has beaten are Matangi, Matamata, Morrinsville, and Waihou. The Cambridge team is handicapped much below Christchurch, but it has retained the same players for some years, and their individual ability has been moulded to give the team great cohesion, so that, although there is likely to be only one match for the Savile Cup this year, it should be a spectacular display. The Cambridge team and the four select players of the Christchurch Club with their respective handicaps are:— Cambridge—Rob Peake (5), C. G. Vosper (6), Ken Peake (7), R. Nolan (7). Total handicap, 25. Christchurch—G. H. Grigg (8), R. M. D. Johnson (9), D. W. J. Gould (10), R. B. Johnson (6). Total, 33. The Personnel Vosper, the captain, has been the mainstay of the Cambridge team for several years. He is exemplary in his positional play and is an accurate and long hitter. Ken Peake is a dangerous attacker with very hard and long hitting and accurate timing. He is very quick at intercepting. Rob Peake had his first season in seniors last year, and justified his new status by good games in the Savile Cup matches. He is the youngest player in the team, but has not played in many matches this year. R. H. Nolan was promoted from the junior ranks two seasons ago and is regarded as one of the most promising players in the Auckland province. The team has a very fine string of ponies which should stand them in good stead in Christchurch. The odds, so far as ponies, are concerned, should, however, be in favour of Christchurch, as the long journey must inevitably affect the Cambridge string to some extent.
