The opinion that scientific research was urgently required to maintain New Zealand's fisheries, both salt and fresh water, was expressed by the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. F,. Parry, in an interview, "the Minister mentioned that the Government had decided to make fish research a State activity, and said that the work would

be closely prosecuted. He had gone very thoroughly into the position of thfe country's fisheries and he Was satisfied that New Zealand had Exhausted its knowledge of its saltwater and freshwater flsh. As an instance he had (found no set of anglers whose views Were alike when asked f6f opinions about the improvement of freshwater fishing. He Was satisfied that intense research was now necessary to guide the authorities in the proper develops m£nt of the fisheries. The Fish Research Department, established by the Government, was working well, and Would, he felt sure, be of great value to the Country. It would be a calaniity if NeW Zealand's fishing deteriorated.
