AUSTRALIAN TENNIS TITLES

HOPMAN'S SURPRISE WIN

BROMWICII A POSSIBILITY FOR

DAVIS CUP

(Received January 28, 12.15 a.m.)

SYDNEY, January 27

The Australian tennis championships have reached the quarterfinals. Results:—

Men's Singles—J. Bromwich beat D P Turnbull (South Australia}. 6-2, 6-2, 6-0; J. H. Crawford beat L. Schwartz (South Australia), 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3; V. B. McGrath beat A. Kay (Victoria), 6-2, 6-2, 8-6. H. C. Hopman beat A. K. Quist. 11-9, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. This result was a complete surprise. Hopman outgeneralled Quist with clever variations of his game, which upset Quist, causing him to lose much of his customary accuracy. Crawford, owing to being less enthusiastic than his young opponent, went perilously close to being beaten. Bromwich is rapidly playing himself into the Davis Cup team. He outplayed Turnbull at all stages, losing only four games. Winners of the women's doubles quarter-finals were:—Misses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, V. Selwm and A. Hattersley, T. Coyne and N. Wynne and Mrs Westacott and Mrs Hopman.
