The Hon. 'D. G., Sullivan, Minister for Railways, yesterday said that because of unforeseen circumstances, he finds it necessary to postpone for about a fortnight the tour of the South Island, which he intends to make in continuation of his policy of familiarising himself with all sections of railway and departmental road motor-service routes. The Minister now expects to leave Wellington for Picton ori January 27. On January 28 and 29 he will be in the Marlborough and Nelson districts. From January 30 to February 2 he will visit and Reefton districts, and from February 3 to February 9 he will be in Greymouth and South Westland, returning to Wellington, via Christchurch, on February 10. The Minister’s tour of other parts of the South Island will probably be arranged to start about a week after his returri to Wellington from the West Coast.—Press Association.
The Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), who is visiting Southland for the first time since his assumption of office, spent yesterday receiving deputations, conferring with the Southland Education Board, and visiting schools and proposed sites for- schools. .In the evening he addressed a meeting of the Southland School Committees’ Association. To-day Mr Fraser will meet members of the Southland Hospital Board and will inspect the new hospital at Kew. He will also meet the high schools’ and technic..! college boards and the Southland Land Board. This evening he will be the guest of the ; Invercargill branch of the New Zealand Labour party at a social.—Press Association.
Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf has been appointed a member qf the Canterbury Agricultural College Bbard of Governors for three years, as the Governor-General’s representative. Mr Basil Turner; of Turners, Ltd., Christchurch, will leave to-night for Wellington to connect with the Rangitane, which is to . leave Wellington for London on Thursday. Mr Turner is going on business, and expects to be away for about 12 months. At a special meeting of the Christchurch iFire Board, reference was made to the loss the board had suffered in the death of Mr C. J. Treleaven, who had been secretary for more than 23 years. It was resolved to place on record appreciation of the services of Mr Treleaven, and a vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Treleaven and family. . •,
Dr. P. H. McDowall, of the-research staff of Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, spent yesterday in Christchurch and returned to the north by the steamer express last evening.
Mr William Taylor, who has had 48 years of service with' Kempthorne, Prosser and Company’s- New. Zealand Drug Company, 1 Ltd., fpr the last 19 years as general manager, will retire about March 31. He will be succeeded as general manager by Mr Malcolm Stewart, who has served the company for ,19 years, for the last four of which he has been assistant general manager. Mr Taylor will retain his seat on the board of directors of the company.
