UNDERGROUND FIRE IN BERLIN

♦ FIVE HOURS' FIGHT WITH FLAMES NINETEEN BRIGADES IN ACTION (Received December 28, 8.30 p.m.) BERLIN. December 27. A thrilling holiday spectacle was provided when, in the presence of an enormous crowd, which was helci back by police under the eyes of Dr. Goebbels, General Goering and Herr Frick, 19 brigades, directed by loud speakers, fought a huge underground fire which was discovered at 5 p.m. in the tunnel of the tube railway being constructed between Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburger Tor, near the scene of last year's collapse, when 19 workmen were killed. The brigades gained control after five hours, averting the danger of the explosion of stored oxygen and acetylene cylinders. There were no labourers below because of Christmas. The watchmen escaped in the nick of time. The firemen tore up the pavement and inserted hoses, using gas masks and oxygen apparatus to face the dense smoke, which made entry impossible and enveloped the entire Potsdamer Platz so densely that searchlights could not penetrate it.
