IRRIGATION FOR NORTH OTAGO

♦— Possibility of New Scheme INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE The area between the Waitaki hydro electric station and Oamaru is the possible field for a new irrigation scheme. This advice was received from Mr D. Barnes M.P., when enquiries were made by a reporter in Temuka yesterday. The possibility of irrigating this area was discussed at Duntroon recently, when Mr T. G. Beck, resident engineer to the Public Works Department at Temuka, at the invitation of Mr Barnes, outlined the problems of irrigation to farmers of the district and agreed to make a report on the position. The question was one of expense Mr Barnes said yesterday. The farmers desired to have their land irrigated, and there could be no doubt that the soil, which was very dry in that region, would respond well The question warranted a fuller investigation, and this investigation would be made at a later date, when Mr Beck's report had been completed and considered. He did not, as yet, feel inclined to say more than that the investigation would | be made, the question of expense considered, and the feasibility of the plan discussed.
