FIRE AT TIMARU OUTHOUSE COMPLETELY DESTROYED BRIGADE PREVENTS FLAMES FROM SPREADING A fire which occurred on the property of Mr J. Moody, Park View terrace, early yesterday morning completely destroyed an outhouse. The outbreak had a good hold before it was discovered, the occupiers of the house being awakened by the reflection of the flames. The fire brigade was called too late to be able to effect a save, but was able to prevent the flames from spreading to an adjoining building. Band Concert Visitors to Timaru were entertained on Sunday evening by a concert given bv the Timaru Municipal Band, under Lieutenant W. H. Osborne, from the new sound shell at Caroline Bay, a large crowd being in attendance. The band was assisted by Mr A. Wheeler (vocalist, with band accompaniment) and Mr J. Maybury (saxophonist). FALL OF THIRTYSEVEN INCHES RAIN IN GERALDINE FOR 1936 ■ YEAR AMONG WETTEST ON RECORD ——- For Geraldine, 1936 has been one of the wettest years since records have been taken. Up till 5 o'clock last evening, Mr B. R. Macdonald, of "Waitui," had recorded 36.90 in for the year to date, compared with 27.02 in for 1935. Other heavy falls recorded by Mr Macdonald were 36.26 in 1925, 34.61 in in 1929. and 33.29 in in 1926. For the 24 hours ended at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, 151 points were recorded by Mr Macdonald, and between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. a further 68 points were registered. Rainfall at Orari Gorge Rainfall registered at Orari Gorge for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday totalled 195 points, and a further 69 points were recorded between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., bringing the total fall for the year to date to 48.97 in This, however, is not a record for Orari Gorge, where 66.10 in were registered in 1923. HEALTH STAMP SALES AT GERALDINE Sales of health stamps made by the Geraldine Post Office, and by canvassers at Geraldine, total £43 9s to date, according to a statement made by the postmaster (Mr L. S. R. King) yesterday. VANDALISM AT PLEASANT POINT TOWN BOARD OFFERS REWARD FOR INFORMATION Commissioner Maze presided at the Pleasant Point Town Board's monthly meeting. It was decided to paint white directional lines on the main highways at dangerous and busy corners. For the relief of distress, £4 was received from the proceeds of the Win a Lot Art Union. No cases of infectious disease were reported by the health officer during the month of November. Mr T. Drummond was appointed dog tax collector. Because of acts of vandalism, it was decided to offer a reward to anyone who gave information which would lead to the convifction of an offender. Christmas Eve In spite of wet weather, shopkeepers reported good business on Christmas Eve. There were more shoppers than last Christmas. Valedictory Dr. and Mrs Benham, who are leaving for Wellington, were given a public farewell at the Town Hall. Mr M. F. Maze presided. He said that Dr. Benham had been a splendid citizen, having interested himself in practically everything which was of benefit to the township. He presented Dr. Benham with an envelope of notes, with which to purchase something which would remind him of his many friends in Pleasant Point. On behalf of the Miniature Rifle Club, Mr Taylor presented Dr. Benham with an engraved fountain pen. Mr Malcolmson spoke on behalf of the tennis club and drama circle and Women's Instiute, and Mr F. H. Friel for the Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr Friel presented Mrs Benham with a present from the branch. Dr. Benham thanked the speakers for their kind remarks and presents. He had much enjoyed his stay in Pleasant Point and was sorry to leave. Owing to heavy rain yesterday making the greens unfit for play, no progress was made in the South Canterbury Bowling Centre's Christmas tournament.

TOWNSHIP BRIGHTLY DECORATED CHRISTMAS EVE IN FAIRLIE Christmas Eve in Fairlie was somewhat spoiled by rain early in the evening. However, the weather cleared later and the usual crowds kept in the main street until a late hour. With the help of the county council the various business places were decorated with greenery and coloured lights. This, with numbers of streamers of coloured lights across the street, gave a carnival effect. Shopkeepers reported good business, although trade during the week was quieter than usual. During the evening the Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band paraded anpl played a number of selections. TEMUKA PERSONAL ITEMS Mr O. F. Hancox, Ashburton, is spending the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs G. Hancox, King street. Mr L. M. Johnston, of the Public Works Department, is visiting Nelson. Mr W. P. Noble is visiting Christchurch for the Christmas holidays. Miss Ella McCallum, Invercargill, is the guest of Miss Jean Cameron. I Mr and Mrs J. G. Mills, Dunedin, who were the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Goodman, have left for Nelson. Mr H. S. Boyle is visiting Christchurch for a short holiday. Mr R. F. Findlay, Christchurch, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs A. Findlay. Mr R. Trigance is, spending the holidays in Christchurch. Miss Betty Austin has received notice of her appointment to the position of infant mistress at Ardgowan School at Oamaru. Mr L. Butters is spending his annual holidays at Rangiora. Mr and Mrs T. G. Beck and family are spending the Christmas holidays camping at Lake Heron. HEALTH STAMP SALES INCREASING Health stamp sales up to December 23, which is approximately halfway through the period of the campaign, were much greater than the total amount collected last year. The figures so far are £4B 9s. and the total realisation from last year's effort was £3l lis. Of the sum collected this year £4l 10s has been raised by the sale of stamps and £6 16s 9d by donations.
