DEVIATION IN MAIN HIGHWAY

* LAYING OF FOUNDATION BEGUN Work on the deviation of the main highway between Winchester and the Rangitata is proceeding very satisfactorily and during the last week the laying of the foundation has been taken in hahd. From Winchester north the new highway follows the line of the present main Win-chester-Orari road, and for the four and a half miles between the two townships the surface has been scarified to a width of 40 feet. Three lorries carrying three yards of metal in each load are laying about 50 yards of material a day, and two road rollers are binding the new surface in preparation for the bitumen. Only a few chains of the roadway has been laid at present, and it is expected that the work will take four or five months to complete to a point just north of Orari. From this point to the Rangitata forms a separate contract, and the work is not likely to start there for some little time.
