CAR BURSTS INTO FLAMED COLLISION AT AUCKLAND (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, December 27. One person was admitted to hospital and several others received minor injuries, after a collision on the waterfront road at Orakei about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. A passenger in one car, Mrs L. Derrick, of Ponsonby, suffered head injuries and shock. The driver, N. Walker, of Kohimarama, Mrs Walker, and their infant son. and another passenger, Miss B. Green, all received cuts or shock* The car burst into flames, and Mrs Derrick, who had been thrown forward through the windscreen, was lifted clear just in time. The driver of a motor-bus stopped and put out the fire with an extinguisher, but the collision and the flames had damaged the car extensively. All the injured persons were taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but except for Mrs Derrick they were able to go home after receiving medical attention. The four occunants of the other car were not injured. YOUNG MAN DROWNED BATHING IN WAIHOPAI RIVER (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, December 27. Godfrey Baxendale Beissel, a married man aged about 22, residing in Invercargill, was drowned while bathing in the Waihopai river at Longbush this afternoon. He was bathing with three of his brothers-in-law, Hector, Malcolm, and lan McKenzie, of Rimu. Beissel remained longer in the water than the others and sank twice before it was realised that anything was wrong. . ~ Hector McKenzie, although he could not swim, went to the rescue, but was forced to struggle back to the bank after three unsuccessful attempts to bring Beissel to the surface. Help was then summoned. It was 4.45 p.m., however, before George Nunn, a farm labourer. of Rimu. was able to recover the body. Beissel was an employee in the mechanical department of the “Southland News.” PTOMAINE POISONING EIGHT MEMBERS OF FAMILY AFFECTED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 27. Eight people of a family of nine, who are spending a holiday at Ostend, Waiheke Island, suffered from attacks of ptomaine poisoning after their midday meal on Saturday. The main dish at the meal was ox tongue which had been cooked, not tinned, and only one of the family escaped from distressing effects which followed. Those affected were five adults and three children, the most serious case being a boy aged 5J years. When it was seen that most of the members of the family were affected, a call was sent to the district nurse at Waiheke Island, who gave attention to t?ie eight affected. None of the family is suffering any severe after effects from the poisoning. CAR GOES OVER BANK BOY INJURED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, December 26. A car driven by Kenneth George Apia Callingham went over a bank in the Taita Gorge yesterday morning. Brian Douglas Callingham, aged 13. a passenger, was severely cut about the arms and legs. MANAWATU COLLISION SIX PERSONS IN HOSPITAL (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) PALMERSTON N., December 26. Six persons were admitted to hospital as the outcome of accidents which occurred in Manawatu over Christmas. The worst accident happened when two cars collided on the FoxtonShannon road on Christmas Eve. Four people were injured, Stanley Silk, a farm manager, of Foxton, receiving head injuries, Mrs Silk a fractured right leg and injuries to the arms, Thomas Ropohama, of Shannon, a fractured left leg, jaw, and right arm, and Ihaia Muhu, face injuries and shock. PEDESTRIAN SERIOUSLY INJURED THREE PERSONS INVOLVED IN COLLISION Three Christchurch residents, Richard Stewart, a married man of Stanmore road, Linwood, Lawrence Fisher, aged 25, of 261 Cashel street, and his wife were injured in an accident near the Main South road railway crossing at Ashburton on Saturday evening. Fisher was riding a motor-cycle with his wife on the pillion, when he collided with Stewart, who was walking across the road to catch the special train for Christchurch after attending the Ashburton trotting meeting. Stewart was admitted to the Ashburton Hospital in a serious condition and late last evening no change was reported in his condition. Fisher and his wife received abrasions and were admitted to the hospital but were able to return to Christchurch yesterday. KNOCKED OFF BICYCLE Clifford Carr, a young man, of 63 Mackworth street, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital last evening suffering from head injuries which he received when he was knocked off his bicycle, which was struck by a motor-car at the corner of Lichfield and High streets about 11 p.m. His condition was not serious.
