Pacific Airways

This week the agreement between the New Zealand Government and Pan-American Airways for the establishment of a flying service between San Francisco and Auckland will expire unless an extension of time is agreed upon. Since the United States company has within the last ■'•w days begun a survey of the HonoluluAuckland section of the route, it seems reasonable to assume that the project has not been abandoned. The New Zealand public is, however, entitled to a clear statement by the Government of the position reached in the negotiations. All it knows is that the service would now' be in operation but for an involved and largely unnecessary argument about reciprocal rights over bases. There is a suspicion, and a justifiable suspicion, that New Zealand is missing an unrivalled opportunity to improve its communications because of a quibble over eventualities never likely to arise.
