BEACH CARNIVAL AT TIMARU

# OPENING CEREMONY HELD Summer weather prevailed for the opening of the Caroline Bay carnival at Timavu on Saturday afternoon, but because of the restrictions imposed by the Health Department to deal with infantile paralysis the attendance was much smaller than usual, and included no children under the age of 16. The vigilance of 10 inspectors posted at various entrances to the bay successfully kept children from the beach, which in consequence bore a deserted appearance when compared with previous carnivals. For the same reason, cars with family parties in them sought other destinations for the day, with the result that the parking figures were almost negligible. In a good many instances, however, children were to be seen lined along the top of Stafford street gazing over the fence at the forbidden territory, leaving later for other places which, if they possessed fewer attractions, also imposed fewer restrictions for the youngsters.

A large crowd was nevertheless present when the opening ceremony was carried out from the sound shell, the president of the Caroline Bay Association (Mr A. S. Aitkent welcoming the visitors and expressing the hope that their sojourn in Timaru would be a pleasant one. The Mayor (Mr P. C. VinnelH in declaring the carnival season opened, said. that he trusted visitors would want to return to Timaru. where the'’ would always be assured of a warm welcome. For many years, the Caroline Bay Association had worked assiduously for the improvement ot the bay, and he hoped that its efforts would be advanced as a result of the 1936 carnival.
