# MR SAMUEL D. BARKER The funeral of Mr Samuel D. Barker, who was drowned in tragic circumstances in the Clyde river, Gorge, on Christmas Day, was held at the Ashburton Cemetery yesterday, and was largely attended. Short services were held at the residence of the young man’s parents. Mr and Mrs H. L. Barker, Alford Forest road, and St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, by the Ven Archdeacon A. J. Petrie, who conducted the service at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. G. Denham, J. C. Pattle, B. Knox, A. M. Cookson, S. Graham, and A. Kelly, members of the Erewhon branch (Ashburton) of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. The chief mourners were Mr H. L. Barker, Miss Marama Barker, Miss Lois Petrie, and Mr P. Barker, Among those present were Miss E. J. Watt (matron), sisters and nursing staff of the Ashburton Public Hospital. Messrs W. H. Woods, E. B. Newton, W. H. Bundle, H. G. Kemp, E. A. Denham, R. A. Bathurst) and was adjourned until this morning after evidence of identification had been given by Mr H. L. Barker, the young man’s father.
