In sentencing Leonard William Roden to 14 days' imprisonment on a charge of being intoxicated in chaigof a motor vehicle, Mr T. E. Maunscll. In this case, a man had hi? wife and children in the vehicle, and if he had not been intercepted by a police sergeant he would have driven and might have caused a tragedy. “There is only one thing for it and that is imprisonment. That is the only course to take to stop it. If people drive cars when they are intoxicated they must go to gaol.” Senior-Sergeant Petersen said that Roden was a relief worker with four children. Sergeant Simister saw the accused in an intoxicated condition get into a truck and fake the wheel, with his wife and a total of seven children waiting in the vehicle. The sergeant then made the arrest in order to prevent Roden from driving. Roden pleaded guilty.
