The visitors were entertained at • Christmas party, arranged by th® officers of the lodge. Swimming Club Dance One of the most successful flannel dances held this season was that hem by the Lyttelton Menu Swimming Club in the Excelsior Hall on Saturday night. There was a very large attendance of dancers and modern dance music was provided by the Majestic Orchestra, extras being played bv Mr W. Needham, of the R.M.S. Ruahine. Lucky spot dances were won by Mr M. Bernand and Miss I. Duncan, and by Mr J. Massey and Miss N. Duff. An eccentric dance was given by Mr T. Ellis. Seamen Entertained The work done by the Sailors’ Institute at Lyttelton was illustrated during the Christmas season, when about 70 men from the overseas ships now in port were entertained by the board of directors of the institute, with the assistance of the ladies' guilds of Canterbury. On Christmas night a social programme of competitions, games, and other items, led by Mr F. Heal, was enjoyed. Supper was supplied by the guilds. A large Christmas cake, given by the members of the Ashburton Guild, was cut by Miss Norton and distributed amongst the men. Appreciation was expressed by the men for the ditty bags provided by the ladies’ guilds. During the evening greetings and good wishes were sent by the men to the president. Mr J. T. Norton, who was prevented by illness from being present. On Boxing Day about the same number of men were entertained at a picnic at Diamond Harbour. During the evening the men were again entertained at a social in the institute and prizes gained during the competitions and games were distributed.
