OFFICIAL FORECASTS [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. December 27. The Dominion Observatory’s forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Light to moderate but increasing north-east to northerly winds, changing to southerlies within about 24 hours. Weather cloudy to overcast, sultry, and hazy, with rain gradually developing. Temperatures cooler on Monday. Seas slight lo moderate, but rising later north of Kaikoura. The following is the Dominion forecast; — Cloudy, warm and sultry, but otherwise mainly fine at first, rain developing shortly, however, in northern and western districts, and becoming fairly general within 24 hours. A cool change to-morrow in the southern half of the South Island. An anti-cyclone of slight intensity covers New Zealand and an area to the eastward. A rather more intense anti-cyclone is located over south-eastern Australia. Between these is a depression of considerable activity. Winds—Light to moderate, northeasterlies, freshening gradually, especially in and south of Cook Strait, and tending more northerly, changing to southerlies by the morning in the southern half of the South Island. Seas iNew Zealand waters) —Slight to moderate but rising later south of Cape Egmont. Eastern Tasman sea— Light to moderate north-east to northerly winds, freshening somewhat. A southerly change advancing from the west during the next 24 hours. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Alter intermittent sunshine the sky clouded over late in the afternoon iu Christchurch on Saturday. The day was warm with a wind Irom the cast. Yesterday was dull and only moderately warm, with a chill wind from the east. Late last evening light rain began lo fall. The maximum temperature cn Saturday was 67.2 degrees, and yesterday 61.2 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning a light rain was falling and the sky was overcast. The temperature was 59 degrees and a light easterly wind was blowing. The barometer, falling, registered 30.05 in. Total for corresponding period 1934, 2011 hours 20 minutes. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland—The weather on Saturday was warm and fine, with light northerly wind. The wind changed to the north-east on Sunday morning, when the sky was overcast, and light rain fell. In the afternoon it was cloudy and fine, and the heat was oppressive. The barometer remained steady over the week-end at 30.20 inches. Wellington—On Saturday morning the sky was at times overcast and misty, but the weather was otherwise fair to fine, with a pleasant temperature. A fresh northerly breeze blew in the morning, but fell away in the afternoon. Sunday was fine, warm, and sultry, although in the afternoon if became overcast. The wind was very light, south-easterlies prevailing until 3.30 p.m., when there was a change to the north. The minimum temperature on Friday night was 56.9 degrees, the maximum on Saturday being 67.5 degrees at 4 p.m. The temperature was 63.8 degrees on Saturday night, the minimum being 53.0 degrees. The maximum on Sunday was 71.2 degrees. Dunedin—Bright, summer weather prevailed on Saturday, the sun shining brilliantly until well into the afternoon. when the sky became lightly overcast. There was a fresh southwesterly breeze in the earlier part of the morning, but this gradually died away and swung round to the northeast, remaining light for the remainder of the day. The temperature was very warm, the maximum reading at midday being 72 degrees. Sunday was again bright and fine, although a strong north-easterly breeze kept the temperature down somewhat.
