Air transport has brought a new peril to India, the possibility of yellow fever being introduced from Africa. To guard against this danger £12,000 is to be spent on equipping the Karachi Air Port with every kind of preventive device. Up to the advent of air transport there was little danger of the introduction of yellow fever, for the time spent in journeying from Africa to India was more than nine days, the infective period of the disease. Aeroplanes now make it possible to reach India from Africa within that period, and the situation has been completely altered. The danger is real, for India possesses large, populations likely to be highly susceptible to the disease, and other conditions, including the prevalence of stegomyia mosquitoes, are favourable for its development. The expenditure approved is to be used for the provision of isolation quarters, of measures for disinfection, disinsectisation, the control of mosquitoes in the air port area and of a special staff.
