Backers’ Good Start The Bigot, although drawn No. 15 at the post, was favourite for the Maiden Race. He was never further back than fourth, and joining the leaders, Jazz Boy and Old Surrey, who had headed him to the straight, he looked like going on for a comfortable victory. The other pair, however, stuck well, and hard ridden,' the favourite only squeezed home, while Old Surrey caught Jazz Boy in the last few strides. Glenthawn, who was one of the well backed runners, was next. Jazz Boy was a rank outsider, carrying only £27 10s, and he nearly won. He carries the same colours as Hunting Cat. There was a lot of money for the Riccarton representative, Day Dress, but she was lost in the ruck at the start and w~j in the bunch behind the placed horses at the finish. A Close Finish Charade, favourite for the Highweight Handicap, though there was nearly as much money for Silent Acre —just won in a close finish. Charade waited for her run until the home turn, and then in the straight she got up on the rails. This won her the race, for she just nosed out Windward, while both caught the pacemaker, Vonia Park, in the last strides. Silent Acre faded out in the last couple of furlongs. The Hat Trick Terry, the favourite for the Tararua Hack Handicap, lay in the rear for-six furlongs, and when she ran past the leaders in the straight she appeared to have the race well won. The Buzzer, however, who delayed his run, came brilliantly over the final furlong, and won going away. The pacemaker, Hamarin, weakened to third with Pango and Free Gold next. The Buzzer gave A. Jenkins his third successive win. he having previously ridden The Bigot and Charade. Spiral’s Surprise Win Spiral brought off a mild surprise in the Manawatu Cup, but he looked well and won decisively after covering a lot of ground round the home turn. The race was slowly run early, with Tiger Gain and Rona Bay making the pace. Tiger Gain still had charge entering the straight for the run home, and looked all over a winner, as he was holding off all challengers fairly comfortably. Spiral’s brilliant late run, however, was irresistible. One Whetu, like Spiral, came from the rear for his third, a performance indicating that he is near his best again. Limbohm was fourth and was still another to get into the picture from the re?, of the field. Dungarvan pulled himself to pieces in the slow early pace and Lowenberg also disappointed, though he finished very solidly in fifth place. * Hot Favourite Beaten Lazybones, a hot favourite for the two-year-old race, failed to get going with his opponents and was in the rear all the way, making up ground only when the race was all over. This, of course, is not his true form, and he requires a stronger rider. The race was won by the other Riccarton representative, Allspice, who with Laughing Chief was always in front. The former stuck on the better. Mother in Law and Gay Molly chased them all the way, but were unable to make much impression, and the others were a long way back. A Small Field Scratchings considerably reduced the strength of the field in the hack sprint and Ned Cuttle was made favourite. He just failed to reach the Otaki winner, Huntette. who led all the way. Ned Cuttle finished well from the rear of the field. Fiimesko and Thfirmidar

were next after following Huntette to the straight. A Class Sprinter Paper Slipper demonstrated his class by winning decisively m the open sprint, for which he was a S O . favourite. Paper Slipper was sixth or seventh in the running, but alter Emissary had headed the pacemakers, Symcony and Land Tax, into the straight, Paper Slipper came with a great run to cut them all down and win going away. Emissary stopped very badly in the last furlong, Invoice running on for second from Laughmg Lass and Mother Superior both o£ whom finished well from a long way back. Dollar Bill also finished well after getting away in the rear. Orac set a terrific pace m the concluding event and had most of tne field in trouble a long way from home. It suited Arctic King, however, and over the final stages he ran past them all to win going right away, Geitel just failing to catch Orac. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, December 27. A firmer track and faster going are in prospect for the second day’s racing to-morrow. This may tend to upset form a little, but a more important factor will be the presence of several of the leading jockeys, who were at Auckland on Saturday. Considerable improvement must be expected from any horses on which they take a mount. The following horses may be supported in their engagements:— Trial Handicap: Nereus and Alunga. Linton High-weight: Blue Tiger and First Spec. Highden Hack: Tosh and Peter Beckford. President’s Handicap: Dungarvan and One Whetu. Champion Hack: Kindheart and Finnesko.
