NOTES ON THE RACING Blue Blood Wins The Croydon Handicap was robbed of a lot of interest when Indian Scout was scratched owing to an injury he received through coming into contact with a hurdle last Wednesday. In his absence Blue Blood was made favourite on the strength of his winning performance at the recent Wairio meeting. He took charge halfway through the race, and finished solidly to score in decisive manner. Braemar was never further back than second over the last mile, and he seemed assured of second money when he broke in the, last few strides, and was headed by Apnomatox. who was prominent throughout. Imperial Wave ran a fair race into fourth place, but the others shaped very badly. It was a poor race, and the field was strung out over two furlongs, with only half the journey covered. Trained at Oamaru The Southland owned and Oamarutrained Waipahi was a solid favourite for the Trial Handicap, and he outclassed the opposition. He began slowly, but with half a mile covered he had run into sixth place. Budge was clear at this stage, and held a good lead along the back, where Waipahi ran into second place followed by Direct Thorpe and Grand Meteor. With two furlongs to go, Waipahi ran up to Budge, and the pair had the race to themselves all down the straight. Waipahi was always going well within himself, and his rider was content to beat Budge by a narrow margin. Direct Thorpe was a poor third, and King Drusus and Carver Doone next. Park Drive fell at the home turn, and interfered with several horses, but they were all hopelessly out of the race at that stage. Opposition Outclassed The Addington trained. Renown’s Best, outclassed the opoosition in the Gore Trotting Cup. She was nicely placed at the end of the first mile, but then broke, and lost easily eight lengths. When she settled down again she showed a great burst of speed, which took her up to the leader, Bello Grattan, two furlongs from home. From then on she just jogged, and had the finish to herself. It was the easiest win ever recorded in the history of the race. Had there been anything in the race capable of extending her a time record would have gone by the board. Tawny and Ma Waro were the leaders over the first mile from Double Great and Belle Grattan. Tawny, Ma Waro, and Double Great were badly beaten half a mile from home, and although Belle Grattan was three lengths clear three furlongs from home, she stopped badly in second place. Blue Spark was the only one finishing on apart from the leader, and there was a lot of merit in his third, as he was slow away, and broke early. He made up a lot of ground over the last half-mile, but nothing would have beaten the winner. A Close Finish The best finish of the day was seen in the E. A. Pigeon Memorial Handicap. Ronald Derby was never further back than third and, taking charge half a mile from home, he won by a neck from Roan Duke, who made a good run over the last half mile and

cut Guy Mauritius out on the post. Guy Mauritius was one of the leaders throughout, but tired over the last bit. The favourite, Gold Salute, was fourth early, but could not improve his position and finished there five lengths away. Sir Gowan was the early leader, but he stopped badly over the last half mile, when Ronald Derby headed him. Eddie Tolan lost his chance at the start and so did Rollalong. A One-horse Race Patty Todd made a one-horse race of the Mataura Handicap. She was 20 lengths clear at the end of the first mile, and Blue Blood was the only one to get within striking distance of her over the last half mile. Blue Blood broke at the top of the straight when he was assured of second money and he failed to settle down again, with the result that both Blue Logan and Anna’s Voyage beat him home. Led All the Way Silver Laddie led all the way in the Stewards’ Handicap, and paid over a score on the win machine. Ghandi, Capri, and Bright Logan followed Silver Laddie in the early stages, but the leader was always doing it well, and with half a mile to go he was four lengths clear of Capri, with Walter Gay another three lengths away in third position and Ghandi next. Silver Laddie held his lead across the top and won easing up by three lengths from Capri, who beat Walter Gay by four lengths. Norham Lady was a poor fourth. Walter Gay lost a good winning chance by breaking up badly at the start, and he put up a fine performance to finish in the money. Norma Grattan’s Success The President’s Handicap was a good race. Norma Grattan was well placed in the early stages, and she went to the front at the end of five furlongs and held her position to the finish to win decisively from Frisco Silk, who got a bad run and was very unlucky. Worthy Claire made the running until displaced by Norma Grattan, and was a good third at the finish. Erin’s Star finished fast in fourth place. An Odds-On Favourite The scratching pen reduced the field for the Final Handicap to six, and Ma Waro was backed down to odds on. He raced in third position behind Guy Mauritius and Frank Mac to the straight, and then came away to score a decisive win from Guy Mauritius. Nelson Pointer was a poor third and .Vologda next.
