WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

CHRISTMAS PARTY Instead of their usual monthly meeting. members of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute held a social gathering in the Parish Hall, where they entertained their husbands and families. Games and competitions were enjoyed, and treasure hunts were won by Mrs G. Tod and Mrs W. Kolkman. A pianoforte duet was played by Misses Doreen and Vonnie Smith, Miss Carmel Smith sang two songs, and Miss Vonnie Smith danced a Russian dance and a waltz tap dance. Misses Smith and M. Easterbrook and Mr R. Prebble were the pianists. The month’s competitions were judged by Mr and Mrs J, Smith and Miss D. Smith, as follows: —Specimen bloom. Mrs J. Easterbrook and Mrs H. ALLANDALK The December meeting of the Allandalc Women's Institute was presided over by Mrs Crampton. After the business the children were given afternoon tea. at which a big Christmas cake, Inade by Mrs Crampton. had priefe of place. Games were played, and each child was given a bag of oranges, sweets, and nuts. Competitions were won as follows: —Roses, Mrs Guilford 1. Mrs Scarlett and Mrs Guilford (equal) 2; Christmas novelty, Miss C. Crampton 1. Mrs T. B. Crampton 2; bloom. Mrs Scarlett 1 and 2.

TE HAPU KOA TRAMPING CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY The Te Hapu Koa Tramping Club celebrated the end of the year with a big Christmas party, held in the Mayfair Hall. The programme was a varied one, commencing with the screening of moving picture films of all the club outings for the year. From a Christmas tree attractively decorated and laden with mysterious parcels, -Father Christmas, who arrived in a sleigh, drawn by six red clad maidens, presented each guest with a gift. Dancing, the music for which was provided by the Arcadians dance band, was enjoyed for the rest of the evening. Two presentations were made by the president of the club, Mr A. S. Nicholls, one to Mr C. Wilson, the first president of the club who is leaving Christchurch This took the form of a pair of carved book-ends. The other presentation was to Miss T. Merrett and MrNNt. t McCracken, two members of the club who are soon to be married. Their gift was a mirror.
