RANGIORA FESTIVITY WEEK

PARADES AND SWIMMING CANCELLED

Children’s fancy dress and pets’ parades and a swimming carnival included in the programme for Festivity Week in Rangiora, were cancelled by the committee at a meeting yesterday morning This action was taken as a precaution against infantile paralysis. The fancy dress parade was arranged for yesterday afternoon, the swimming carnival for last evening, and the pets’ parade for to-morrow afternoon. The two parades and the carnival, for all of which large entries had been received, will be held later in the summer. Entertainments by Mephisto and an open-air dance this afternoon and evening will be held as arranged. Christmas Gifts for Needy

Fifty-four persons at Rangiora will receive Christmas gifts from the Relief of Distress Committee this year. More than £3O was received by the committee from the community singing held in the Town Hall on Monday evening, and fines imposed at the mock court on Monday afternoon will also be devoted to this cause. Personal Mr and Mrs C. D. Gilling and family left Rangiora last evening to spend a holiday in the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. C. Hancox, of Rangiora. will leave to-day to spend a fortnight’s holiday in Wellington.

Holiday Mountaineering Two members of the Rangiora Mountaineering and Tramning Club will leave to-morrow evening for the Glen Talloch station, from which they will start on a trip to the headwaters of the Rakaia river. After a week’s climbing among peaks at the head of the Ramsay and Lyell glaciers, with headquarters at the Lyell mountaineering hut, thev will cross the Southern Alps to Westland. They will be ioined on Sunday by two other members of the club, who will confine their activities to the headwaters of the Rakaia river.

Waikuku Gala Cancelled At the request of the Health Department, the Waikuku Beach Improvement Association has cancelled its annual gala, which was to have been held at the beach on Boxing Day. The gala will probably be held later in the season. Regent Theatre A particularly brilliant programme of laughter and comedy will be presented to-morrow (Christmas Eye) afternoon and evening, and on Christmas Day at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora. Grade Fields will be seen in her latest comedy success, “Look Up and Laugh,” supported by four of England’s leading comedians. Acclaimed by the critics overseas as “Grade s funniest film,” “Look Up and Laugh’ is a perfect feast of entertainment. Seats may be reserved at Watson’s, telephone 202.

MALVERN TENNIS MATCHES Playing in the Malvern B grade tennis competitions at Kirwee, Darfield beat Kirwee by 128 games to 89.

PRESENTATION AT BELFAST SCHOOL

A presentation was made at the Belfast School residence by the staff to Mr C. G. Price, who, after three years’ service at the Belfast School, has been appointed to a position in the North Island.

KAIAPOI FIRE BRIGADE

OFFICERS ELECTED FOR YEAR

Superintendent G. McGregor presided at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £l4 3s lOd, was adopted. Deputy-Superintendent A. Carr reported on the Citizens’ Cup competition and congratulated the winner, Fireman W. J. Tait, and Fireman T. Ayers, who was second, on the excellent times, which were much better than last year’s. Miniature cups were presented by the superintendent, who expressed satisfaction at the enthusiasm shown by members of the brigade. The following officers were elected: —Foreman, Mr Hector Fowler; secretary, Fireman W. McPartlin; social committee, Foreman Hector Fowler, Firemen W. McPartlin, G. Yellowlees, W. J. Tait, and Harry Fowler; auditors, Engineer R. Ogilvie and Assist-ant-Engineer F. Bryden. It was agreed to take part in an inter-borough contest with the Sumner and New Brighton Brigades, to be held in Sumner early in January. It was decided to write thanking the Kaiapoi Fire Board for the assistance given to the brigade during the last year.

The superintendent, in making a presentation to Fireman T. Ayers, on his approaching marriage, extended the good wishes of the brigade for his future happiness.

The meeting concluded with supper and a social evening.

FAREWELL TO CHEVIOT RESIDENTS

MR AND MRS C. S. GORDON HONOURED

A pleasant afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs T. Edridge, where lady members Qf the Cheviot Golf Club gathered to say farewell to Mrs C. S. Gordon, who is leaving the district. Mrs Gordon, who has been lady manager of the local club for the last seven years, was presented with a crystal vase and honey jar. Mrs Edridge spoke of the interest Mrs Gordon had taken in the club, and asked Mrs McLaren to make the presentation. A buffet tea was served in the hall and dining room. On the occasion of his departure to Wyndham, Mr C. S. Gordon, headmaster of the local school, was presented with an electric iron by the staff and pupils. The presentation was made by Mr A. C. Fuller, chairman of the school committee. Personal Notes Mrs Eric Wilkinson, Ohaupo, Waikato, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs G. McDonald, Cheviot. Mrs J. H. Wilson Taupiri, Waikato, is visiting her father. Mr E. Savage. Cheviot. Miss Jean Stevenson, science mistress, Girls’ High School, Hastings, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs T. Stevenson, Cheviot.

PRESENTATION AT DARFIELD

Miss Hilda E. Cullen received a silver tea service from the members and executive of the Malvern County Council. The presentation was made at the monthly meeting of the council. The chairman, members, and executive of the council extended their congratulations to Miss Cullen and wished her a long, happy, and prosperous future.

AKAROA PERSONALS

Miss Agatha Corbett (Akaroa) has returned from Invercargill, where she had been spending a holiday with her sisters. Mesdames Tapley and Otway. Mr and Mrs H. G. Youngman, Christchurch, and formerly of Akaroa, where Mr Youngman was postmaster for several years, celebrated their golden weddinglast week with a family gathering at their home in Bealey avenue.

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS AT KAIKOURA

A dance was held in the Drill Hall, the proceeds being in aid of the local convent. Mrs W. D. Sabiston’s orchestra played the music. The masters of ceremonies were Mr A. Gibson and Mr C. Wareham. Birthday Party A surprise party met at the Lynton Downs schoolroom, Kaikoura, on the cc_asion of the twenty-first birthday of Lynton Weavers, second son of Mr and Mrs E. E. Weavers, Mounsdale, Lynton Downs. The evening was spent in games, competitions, and dancing. Music was played by Misses L. Williams, E. Weavers, and L. Lane. Mr M. Perrin was master of ceremonies. A competition was won by Mr A. Meadows, and the lucky packet by Mrs W. F. Perrin. During the evening Mr J. E. Barker, Sawyer Downs, presented Mr Lynton Weavers with a pair of leather motor gloves. Mr Weavers returned thanks.

Mr E. E. Weavers expressed thanks on behalf of Mrs Weavers and himself for the pleasant evening given in honour of their son.
