The reported action of a school medical officer, Dr. Deans, in her treatment of Maori pupils attending the Te Kuiti District High School, was discussed by the executive of the Maori-Pakeha Federation at its first meeting, held in Rotorua during the week-end. Te Kuiti delegates attending the meeting reported that Dr. Deans, when she inspected the district high school, had ordered the Maori children to be separated from the European children, and had ordered the Maoris to be immersed in a large bath containing disinfectant. No similar action had been taken with the European children. It was felt that this differentiation placed the native children in a humiliating position, and it was decided to write to the Government expressing the opinion that methods which implied racial differentiation should not be employed by school medical officers. It was stated that some days before Dr. Deans's visit a native nurse had inspected the Maori children at the school and was quite satisfied with them.—Press Association.
