RECORDS TO BE TAKEN

WATER AVAILABLE FOR IRRIGATION i LEVEL KECORDERS , AND RAIN CALCES LTHE PRESS Special Service] TEMUKA, December 21. Satisfactory progress is beingmade in the work of installing lakelevel recorders, rain gauges, and 1 other instruments throughout the province. Advice was received today from Mr T. G. Beck, resident engineer to the Public Works Department at Temuka, that a number of recorders had already been established, and apparatus would in due course be placed in other regions—the Hurunui river (north branch), and the Ashburton, Ashley, and Waiau rivers. Three men were now engaged in installing an automatic lake-level recorder at Lake Heron, and it was expected that the work would be finished in January. These installations are part of a major Canterbury irrigation investigation being undertaken by the Public Works Department to determine what water is available in the province for future exploitation, and to obtain records of purely scientific value.
