MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS CHARGES

Anthony Shannon, labourer, aged 57 years, was fined 20s, in default seven days' imprisonment, on a charge of being found drunk on North Parade on December 19. Loveday Baxton Fenton, a domestic, aged 62 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of being found drunk in Colombo street on December 19. She was fined 10s, in default 24 hours' Imprisonment.

Angus McLean (Mr J. K. Moloney), a labourer, aged 54 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness in Manchester street. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon, a condition being that he remain in the Salvation Army home. REMAND GRANTED Norman Sutherland, a trimmer, appeared on a charge of knowingly instigating the escape of a patient from the Templeton Farm School and mental institution. , , , Sub-Inspector D. A. Mac Lean asked for a remand for one week. He asked that bail be substantial. Bail was allowed, self in £3OO, with one surety of £3OO, a condition being that the accused report daily to the police. William Healy, Edward Henry Cross, Alexander Mundie, and Thomas Henry Watts were each fined 10s on charges of being found on the licensed premises of the Belfast Hotel after hours. CHARGE OF OBSCENE LANGUAGE Romulus Walter Lilley, a relief worker, of Thackeray street (Mr R. A. Young), was charged with using obscene language and with a breach of a prohibition order. Arthur Lawson Stubbs, a railway fireman, gave evidence that he saw accused and his wife come out of their house, and accused used the language complained of. Another witness gave corroborative evidence.

Constable McKay, of Phillipstown, gave evidence tl'at accused had made a statement admitting having a "few beers" that day. Accused, in evidence, denied having had any drink or having used the language mentioned in the charges. Accused was convicted ?.nd ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, and to take out a prohibition order forthwith. T. H. Sunckell (Mr R. A. Young) was convicted and ordered to pay costs for exceeding the speed limit for a heavy motor-vehicle.

Francis Lewis Hall was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for breach of an order in respect of two children, warrant to be suspended so long as a payment of Is a week is made in addition to the current order.

Sidney Smith was convicted and sen. tenced to a month's imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, warrant to be suspended so long as a payment of 2s 6d a week is made in addition to the current order. Lewis Walter Saunders was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment for breach of an order in respect of his wife, warrant to be suspended so long as 2s 6d is paid in addition to the amount of the current order.

Rudolph Christian Greatbatch was ordered to pay 15s a week for the maintenance of his wife. Mr J. T. Watts appeared for complainant, and Mr J. K. Moloney for defendant.

In accordance with the instructions issued by the Education Board, the Kirwee School closed on Tuesday. An open-air concert was held in the school ground. Bevan Begg; duet, Nola Ward and Evelyn Fitzgerald; song, Desmond Begg and chorus. Mr J. F. Lawrey (chairman) congratulated the headmaster, Mr A. Aitken. on his excellent report for the year, and also made a small presentation to Miss J. Bridgewater, relieving assistant mistress. He then handed the children their prizes.
