BONUS FOR THE POOR

FEWER BENEFIT THIS YEAR All those families which receive charitable aid from the North Canterbury Hospital Board will receive the annual Christmas bonus -on Thursday, another grant having been made by the Government. The total amount of the grant this year is not yet known, but because of the.institution of invalidity pensions it will be considerably smaller than last year. The amount of the individual bonus is £1 for each parent of the family receiving charitable aid, and 5s for each dependent member of the family. Last year the North Canterbury Hospital Board paid out about £7OO in this bonus, but it is thought that the amount will be much smaller this year, because about 200 of those benefiting last year now draw invalidity pensions. It is impossible to estimate the number who will draw the bonus when it is paid out next Thursday, but it is thought that the number will be little more than half last year's total.
