LICENSING OF TRANSPORT

SITTING AT KAIKOURA

APPLICATIONS CONSIDERED "The conditions will be better for all concerned," said Mr T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, at the conclusion of a sitting at Kaikoura yesterday. "Vehicles will be inspected rigidly in future, as some vehicles are operating that are unfit to be on the road." Mr Langford added that it was for the holders of licenses to see that their vehicles were roadworthy, especially where the country was hilly. Names had to be clearly painted on both sides of the vehicles as a protection against carriers operating illegally. Mr E. S. Brittenden, district traffic manager in Christchurch, represented the Railway Department at the sitting. An application by Curran's Motors (Kaikoura) for an extension of area was refused, and an application covering the previous route was granted. An application from L. Pugh (Clarence Bridge) was granted, the license to operate till May 31, 1939. The area was that within a radius of 15 miles from the' Clarence River Post Office. A general goods extension to Kaikoura was granted for the transport of petrol, oil, posts, and kerosene. Mr E. W. Harris objected to the extension. D. M. Jack (Kaikoura) applied for an extension to Parnassus to cart racehorse and household furniture. Mr Langford said it was not necessary to embody these in his license, as he could obtain a temporary one from the postmaster. Renewal was granted till May 31, 1939. An application by W. T. Dalzell (Blenheim) was granted in terms of his previous license till May 31, 1939. J. L. Thornton (Kaikoura) applied for the renewal of his license and an additional license, which was refused. All temporary licenses to the applicant were withdrawn as from December 22. Decision was reserved on the renewal of .his. license. There were three objections, Mr E. W. Harris (Kaikoura), Mr Clark (Cheviot Motor Company), and Mr Abernethy (secretary, Cheviot Transport Company). The Kaikoura Freight Service, Ltd. (Kaikoura), applied -for additional vehicles and authority for. carriage of sheep. Mr Langford said it was contrary to the policy of the Government to increase licenses unless very good reason were shown, but he would reserve decision if the company could furnish within seven days figures and details of stock to be carried. The

ordinary license was renewed till May 31, 1937. The Kaikoura Transport Company applied for an additional license for trailers for fish only.' The license was renewed till May 31, 1937, and an additional license granted for fish only till May 31, 1937 (not transferable). H. R. Smith (Kaikoura) applied for a license to carry merchandise as well as wood. The application was granted till May 31, 1939, for the carriage of posts, firewood, and shingle only.
