GARDEN FETE

A very successful and enjoyable garden fete was held in the beautiful grounds of Pahau Pastures, Mr and Mrs Marmaduke Bethell's homestead at Amuri, in aid of the funds of the English Church at Culverden. The sum of £lls was raised during the afternoon. Full advantage was taken of the grass courts during the whole afternoon. There was a good attenddance, including visitors from Hanmer Springs, Waiau. Waikari. and Hawarden, and full use was made of the grass tennis court. Winners of competitions were Miss Murgatroyd, Mrs W. T. Rutherford, Mr W. T. Rutherford, Miss Shona Loffhagen. Miss D. Davison. Mrs Burrows.

The stalls and stallholders were as follows:—Fancy: Mesdames H. R. Davison. Johns. M. V. Mockett, and S. Maxwell. Produce: Mesdames Hartnell, W. J. McMillan, Draper, and Miss Rutherford. Sweets: Mesdames H. Searle, H. Croft, R. A. Hoban, Misses Murgatroyd and E. Rutherford. Ice-cream: Misses M. Hills, Mary and Margaret Johns. Afternoon tea: Mrs L. H. Davison and helpers. Cigarettes: Mrs P. A. Thompson. Christmas tree: Mrs Rivers. Art gallery: Mr W. V. Mockett. Tennis: Messrs H. M. Searic and Alan Shand. Clock golf: Mr P. A. Thompson. Sideshows: Messrs L. Mills, Arthur Shand, R. Bethel], L. H. Davison. The goods which were not sold during the afternoon were auctioned by Mr Alan Shand.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

The patients of Cashmere Sanatorium held their Christmas dance and party on Saturday night, and thanks are due to the social committee for the outstanding success of the evening. Blue and gold streamers, coloured lights, clusters of balloons, masses of greenery, and delphiniums and gladioli formed the artistic decorations. Fancy costumes of every description gave added colour to the scene. Prizes for best fancy dress were awarded to Miss Thompson (Cole Black Mommy) and Mr Gayner (Coster). Items were given by the San band, the nurses presented an evening in the "gay 'nineties." a Scottish sketch, also Noel Coward's sketch of policemen. Chappel's dance band, who supplied the music for dancing, gave an item. "Tiger Rag," and Mr Chappel sang two songs. Paper hats and novelties wore distributed and Father Christmas brought a gift lor each of the bed patients present. Dr. Pemberton congratulated the patients and staff on the costumes and the committee which had worked so hard. He also read a telegram of good wishes lrom Dr. I. C. Macmtyre, who u; on holiday. Mr T. McCbmbs, M.P., also spoke. Mr Brownie, on behalf of tn_patients, thanked the speakers for their good wishes and thanked all members of the medical and nursing staff for their attention throughout the year, and extended to them good wishes for Christmas and New Year.

Supper was served in the nurses dining room.

Among those present were Dr. und Mrs Pembeiton, Mrs Macintyre, sen., Matron Griflin, Sisters Watt and Graham, Mrs Wark, Miss Kilpatrick, Mis,; Thompson, Mr T. McCombs, M.P., and Mr P. H. Harris.

LUNCHEON PARTY

A pleasant luncheon parly was held in ihe Cavendish Club, Ashburton, to mark the close of activities until early in the New Year. The tables were decorated with pink and mauve sweet peas, and name cards, bearing the season's greeting;;, were beside each place. The president (Mrs E. SWIMMING CLUB'S DANCE

Many visitors attended a dance held in the Prebbleton Hall by the Swimming Club, members of which are working to obtain funds to erect a fence and dressing sheds at the school baths.

The card room was also well patronised, the leading players being Mrs T. Smith, Mrs W. Kolkman, Mr C. Chesmir, and Mr A. Louison. Other competitions were won by Mrs J. Smith, Mrs Reed, and Mr J. Ander&on. Les Kinsman's band played for the dance, Messrs H. Banfield and Baasford played extras, and Mr J. Smi'h was master of ceremonies.
