ASSISTANT TRADE COMMISSIONER

MR R. P. BOWER ARRIVES FROM CANADA PREVIOUS SERVICE IN/:.DUTCH COUNTRIES [THE PRESS Special Servjce.] AUCKLAND, December 21. To replace Mr H. L. E, Priestman as assistant Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, Mr R. P. Bower arrived from Vancouver by the Niagara. -Mr. Priestman- has be6n transferred to Sydney. There will be a gap between the departure early next year of the present Trade Com- : missioner. Mr C. M. Croft, who has been appointed commercial secretary of the legation at Tokyo, and the arrival of his successor. Mr W. F. Bull, and Mr Eower will be in charge of the New Zealand office during that time.

Mr Bower, who is accompanied by his wife and daughter, said on' hiS" arrival that it' was strange for him to" be' coming to a country where the people spoke English. All his previous service had been in -.Hutch countries. He was assistant Canadian Trade Commissioner in Holland, and more recently acting Trade Commissioner in the Dutch East Indies. Before his departure for Canada six months ago, conditions in Java were far from satisfactory, he said; a.rid there did not seem to be any sign of a return to prosperity.
