BETTER LIGHTING IN FENDALTON

MODERN SYSTEM TO BE CONSIDERED DECISION OF WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL The installation of a modern system of street-lignting in Fendalton from Rcssall street to Clyde road was discussed by the Waimairi County Council at its meeting last evening. The electrical engineer, Mr C. Burrowes, was instructed to prepare a report on a system which would be considered with the estimates of expenditure for next year. Reporting to the council. Mr Burrowes said he would like members to give some consideration to installing a more modern system of street lighting through the heart of Fendalton. which would include Holmwood road from the city boundary to Fendalton road, and Fendalton road from Harper avenue to the railway crossing. These roadways, which carried the bulk of the traffic to and from Fendalton, were very narrow in parts, and were also the tram routes for that district. A trial circuit of brilliantly lighted road surface over those roads would be a great asset to the principal district of the county. The scheme he had in mind would be fairly costly, but the money would be well spent. Other local bodies had adopted modern lighting such as he proposed, and he considered the council would be well advised to improve such an important city thoroughfare as Fendalton road. "I think the idea is a very good one. said the chairman, Mr G. G. Gardner, "but on no account should we havp lights like these the Christchurch City Council has erected in Riccarton avenue. Those lights are a terrible colour. In addition they were very expensive and they are always causing trouble." Mr Burrowes said the scheme could be an enlargement of the system at present in use. Both roads had a good surface and would well repay the expenditure on a modern lighting system. Cr. F. S. Scott said he would like to see the scheme extended to carry the lighting on as far as the corner of Clyde road. He suggested that the engineer should prepare a report with a view to having the scheme considered in next year's estimates Cr. J. Liggins said he considered the scheme could with advantage be extended to other main roads in the county, particularly the thoroughfares which constituted approaches to the city. Lighting was . comparatively cheap and the council could make considerably more use of it than it had done hitherto.
