JAPAN PREPARES TO RETALIATE
AUSTRALIAN TARIFF INCREASES MANUFACTURERS SUPPORT MOVE (Received June 18, 9.40 p.m.) TOKYO, June 17. A Foreign Office spokesman, Mr Amau, said he doubted whether retaliation against Australia could be enforced as soon as to-morrow, but u would undoubtedly be within a few days. Mr Amau added that retaliation was supported by all circles, even manufacturers, who considered it a good opportunity to establish the independence of the clothing industry, including the development of a suitable substitute for wool. The Foreign Minister (Mr Arita) is reported to have told members of the Cabinet that a resumption of trade negotiations with Australia was impossible unless Australia cancelled the tariff increases against Japan. The Domei News Agency learns that Australia’s reply which was received this afternoon was considered unsatisfactory, upon which an official conference decided to submit a proposal for the invocation of the trade protection law to the Cabinet, which is expected to obtain Imperial sanction to enforce it on Friday.
