Dea--18 voll as secretary of the Wellington e Education Board was confirmed by 6 the board at its monthly meeting yes- '■ terday. The present secretary, Mr l ' E. S. Hylton, is retiring on superannuation. Mr Deavoll, who is at presv ent private secretary to the Minister l f for Education, will take up his new „ duties on September 1. a Mr Deavoll, who is 45 years of age, e has been 30 years in the public sern vice. Educated at the Timaru Main ' School, the Glen-iti School, and the 5 * Timaru Boys’ High School, he started work with the Westport Coal Company, and two years later joined the 1 Railways Department. In 1914 he was ] transferred to Wellington as confiden- “ tial clerk to Mr R. W. McVilly at the B railways head office. In 1916 he en- * listed for active service, and on his , return from the war, in 1919, he re- ■ sumed his position. Mr Deavoll was 1 then released for 12 months to act as f secretary of the Railway Board of Ap- ■ peal, and Was later appointed for s special work at the time of the visit to New Zealand of the Prince of Wales (now King Eward VIII.). In January, 1921, Mr Deavoll’s appointment as private secretary to the ■ Hon. C. J. (now Sir James) Parr, ’ then Minister for Education, was an- * nounced. and for 15 years he has served each succeessive Minister for e Education in the same capacity, as well J. as dealing with work connected with * other portfolios.
