MID-CANTERBURY NEWS

WINTER SHOW

ASHBURTON FANCIERS’ SOCIETY RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED Poultry and fancywork were the features of the annual winter show of the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society which opened with record entries in the Ashburton Arcade yesterday. The poultry classes attracted a wide range of birds in which Orpingtons predominated in both the open and utility sections, and in many cases the final selection was a difficult task for the judges. The entries, which totalled 1567. were a record for the show, being 219 more than last year’s figures, and more than in 1934. The increase was mainly in the winter show and dog sections. the dog section being a substantial increase on any show since the section was opened. Vegetables, grain, and seeds have suffered from the effects of the unfavourable season, but in spite of this there was a good showing of roots. One of the attractions was the wide variety of needlework in which the majority of the exhibits were of a particularly high standard , ...... .. The Zouch Cup for the best bird in the show was won by T. Rattray with a barred Plymouth Rock cockerel. T. Findlay was the winner of the Collett Challenge Cup for the best utility black Minorca cockerel or pullet. The Peter Donald Memorial Cup for the best black Orpington was won by T S. Hanna, who also won the trophy last year. The New Zealand Rhode Island Red and Orpington Club’s prize for the best Orpington in open classes was won jy B. Kelly. T. Rattray was also the winner of the Davis Memorial Cup for the best cockerel or pullet. The Smith Cup for the best cock canary was won by G. Duggan, who also won the society’s special for the best hen canary. The Connolly Cup, which is awarded in the cookery section, was won by Mrs L. Maginness, for the second year in succession. Dogs, cats, and rabbits will be judged to-day. The organisation of the show appeared to be on a much better footing this year than for some years. Mr G. H. Nicoll (chairman of the committee) was responsible for the supervision, and was assisted by Mr G. V. Furby (secretary) and a strong committee. The official opening was held last evening, when the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), who was the principal speaker, congratulated the society on its record entries and good showing. The entries for this year compared with those for the previous two years were as follows: 1 1 Q*)<i 1034 Winter show section .. 832 ‘ 674 ' 623 Poultry . • 516 502 393 Dogs .. .. 150 70 86 Rabbits .. .. 34 62 48 Cats .. .. 35 40 25 Totals .. .. 1567 1348 1175 The awards were;— South Island championships were won as follows:—Black Leghorn, open class: R.
