OBITUARY

MRS J. H. BRETT Mrs J. H. Brett, whose death occurred on Sunday, was born on Octo- *.?’ ISM, a t Missouri, India. She was the daughter of Colonel Charles Thynne Thomas, H.E.1.C.5.. Indian Army. In 1861 her father came to New Zealand, and took up land in Riwaka, Nelson. In 1880 Miss Thomas married James Harris Brett, second son of the Hon. Colonel de Renzi Brett, and settled in the Kirwee district. Later, they retired from farm- ? n ß’ spent the rest of their lives Fendalton. Mrs Brett was a keen "hurch worker, and during the war was unfailing in her devotion to the Red Cross Society. She was a wellread woman of wide interests, possessing keen intellectual powers. Her kindness and sympathy endeared her to many, and her deen religious spirit was an inspiration. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs F. N. Thompson, of Fendalton, and Mrs C. Haselden, of Ti maru . and seven grandchildren. Many friends attended the funeral, which took place at the Waimairi cemetery on Tuesday. The Rev. F. B. Redgrave conducted the service. The pall-bearers were Messrs Brett Thompson (grandson), J. Dunkley (nephew), P. Tovey B. Meares, B. H. Williams, and the Rev. W. A. Orange. VICAR’S DANCE ’ The first annual “vicar’s dance” held in St. Faith’s Parish Hall. New Brighton, last evening, was the most successful social function held in the hall. The hall was beautifully decorated with hundreds of bright balloons, coloured streamers, and greenery. The rignt end of the stage had been transformed into a cosy and attractive lounge. The arrangements for the dance were made by a committee consisting of Messrs H. Ardern, W. R. Fitchett, and F. E. W. Hobbs, assisted by the St. Faith’s Young Men’s Club and ladies of the church. The guests of honour were the Rev. Kenneth Schollar and Mrs P. Schollar, mother of the vicar. Mrs Schollar wore a black velvet frock trimmed with diamente clips at the neckline. Music was played by the EvansCampbell dance band, and Mr H. Ardern was master of ceremonies. Among those present were the Mayor and Mayoress of New Brighton (Mr and Mrs E. L. Smith), the Rev.
