CHEVIOT COUNTY COUNCIL
♦ The adjourned annual meeting of the Cheviot County Council was attended by Crs. F. C. de Lambert, W. L. Foster, D. McLaren, J. Paton, G. L. Rutherford, N. R. Wilkinson, and J. D. E. Winskill. Cr. Paton was elected chairman for the ensuing year. The Main Highways Board requested that estimates of expenditure for the current financial year be forwarded. The engineer reported that he had applied for funds to meet the usual maintenance of main highways and also for construction of works as follows: — Benmore bridge, Marchlaw bridge, Gore Bay, deviation. Ben Cruachan deviation, and Manuka creek deviation. The Tauranga County Council forwarded a copy of its resolution that, instead of county employees belonging to various unions according to the nature of their work, there should be a separate county council employees’ union. It was decided to support the Tauranga resolution. The Mackenzie Domain Board, Cheviot, asked that part of Cadman street, Cheviot, between Saunders and Carroll streets, be closed. It was resolved to grant the Domain Board’s request on condition that the board meets all expenses incurred in the transaction.
. It was decided to have inscription stones erected at the commemoration oaks, Cheviot.
Mr R. B. Bennett, Gore Bay, for residents of the district, drew attention to the unsafe condition of the temporary road at the sea-front opposite Farmer street, Gore Bav. He said that the edge of the bank above the beach was within a few feet of the carriageway, and no groyne had been built at this point. The chairman considered the council might well build a few more groynes, possibly shorter, to provide some protection at the point mentioned by Mr Bennett. It was resolved to do this.
Mr E. A. Wilkinson, Gore Bay, drew tne council s attcnliorv lo the narrow part of road near the Cheviot Hills woolshed. He feared a serious accident might occur there and asked that the road be widened. The council decided to attend to the matter Members decided to apply for the Parnassus loop road to be declared a main highway. The annual estimates were submitted. It was decided to postpone their adoption till next meeting, by which date the engineer is to submit data as to the amount considered advisable as a bridges and culverts loan to eliminate the open fords in the county. Accounts amounting to £930 10s lid were approved for payment. The annual report of the engineer (Mr A. R. Callander) said that the in l r J J* ates levied amounted to £4719 19s 7d. Of this amount £239 11s 3d remained unpaid at March 31. During 3 r J ears of rates amounting to £316 5s lOd were collected.
