AUSTRALIAN OFFER TO JAPAN REOPENING OF TRADE NEGOTIATIONS (Received June 18, 12.30 a.m.) TOKYO, June 17. Mr Amau, a spokesman at the Foreign Office, staled: “We are in communication with General Murai, the Australian Consul-General, about the latest offer of Sir Henry Gullet (Federal Minister in charge of Trade Treaties) to apply intermediate tariffs J ~) Japanese goods, which we regard as inadequate. “Our attitude is already clearly defined. Because of Australia’s drastic measures, we are obliged to protect our trade by invoking the law, but if the Australians return to the status quo ante, and are ready to talk on the same footing, w i are quite ready to talk to them.”
