Claim For Same Rights As Other Powers

DISAPPROVAL EXPRESSED IN FRANCE .. Britain Placed In Awkward Position 4 In i"> anxiously awaited reply to the invitation of the league of Nations for Germany to be represented at the league council’s deliberations about the Rhineland, the German Chancellor (Herr Adolf Hitler) insisted that in the deliberations and the decision of the council the German delegate should have equal rights with the delegates of the other powers. It is conkidered Dial the German Ambassador in London (Dr. L. Hoesch) may represent Germany at the council meeting. The reply has been unfavourably received, particularly in France, where it is claimed that the conditions attached to acceptance make it tantamount to a refusal. In England “The Times ‘ is conciliatory towards Germany, but other journals are j ess inclined to this attitude. The difficulties of the British position are emphasised by observers, for France on the one side, and Germany on the other, !*ek her support. No official statement of the British attitude has been made. From Germany come reports of slight uneasiness on the part of the German people. There is fear that by her action in the Rhineland Germany may bring about the effect which she most wishes to avoid—an encircling alliance of powers against her.
