TIMARU T.C.

RECESS WINS CUP fOT LUCK GIVES BRILLIANT ! DISPLAY Very mixed weather was experienced for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and while the track was in good order a very strong wind for the greater part of the afternoon was all against fast times. When the racing began the weather was gloriously fine; but later a strong nor’-wester blew, and matters were made still less pleasant for spectators when a bitterly cold wind with light rain, set in before the last race. There was a good attendance of the public, and the racing was as exciting as has been seen cn the course for many a day. A big attraction was provided in the race for the Futurity Stakes, and 11 well-conditioned and ;well-mannered two-year-olds were the ;centre ■. of interest as they paraded in the birdcage before the race. A warm favourite in Southern Chief proved himself a very speedy pacer, and after losing ground at the start he quickly raced to the front and led for the rest of the journey. It was not altogether an easy win and the driver, R. D. Kennerley, had his colt doing his best over the later stages. He stayed on just too weA , for Loyal Pat, a very, useful gelding from G. McKendry’s stable. The Timaru Cup race was spoiled by the slow pace in the early stages, and a race that was merely a halfmile sprint found Recess too speedy for the others. The time, 4min 41 1— from a 4min 3Qpec mark was disappointing. 1 Pot Luck proved himself a brilliant pacer when he fairly outclassed the field in the Seadown Handicap, and Discord redeemed the promise she showed early in her career by winning both 'unhoppled trotters’ events. On both occasions she showed speed, steadiness, and stamina. , . The totalisator investments, which amounted to £ 10,095.. 10s, showed a decrease of £2299 10s .on the £12,395 put through at the corresponding meeting last year. . NOTES ON THE RACING Discord Shows Form There was nothing very exciting in the contest for the Kingsdown Handicap, for all through the race was confined to the place-fillers, Discord, Chudleigh, and Sphinx. Sir Kit broke up at the start and most of the others also lost ground, .Chudieigh at once struck the front and led from Discord and Sphinx, This trio soon established a break of 10 lengths on the best of the remainder, and it was not until half a mile from home that a serious effort was made to overhaul the leaders. Three furlongs from home Discord drew level with Chudieigh and had no difficulty in holding her own to the finish. The only excitement was provided by Prince Harvester, who came fast at the finish and almost caught Sphinx. Discord is a fine stamp of young trotter, and while some of her previous displays have been disappointing, she now looks like developing into a really good racehorse. She enjoyed all the best of the running, and had a good deal in reserve at the finish. Chudieigh ran his best racq for some time, but he Is not a stayer and is not likely to get any better. Sphinx was solid, and that is all that can be said of him. Prince Harvester was going better at the finish than at any other pari of the race. Helen’s Bay found her handicap all too much, and Tyrone Lass, Harvest Dillon, Billy Sunday, and Ohinemutu were never prominent.

Poor 'Class Pacers A field of nine poor class pacerd paraded, loir- the Trial. Handicap*,and m. a race in which luck in the running played a big part, Precious Metal was all out to defeat narrowly Native Son and Andy Watson. - Trelese and Dusky. Prince lost a lot of ground at the start, and Precious Metal at «pnce took up the naming from Andy Watson, Peter Silk, Colleen Wrack, and Shrewdy. With more than, half the journey covered, Native Son wrested the lead from Precious Metal, and led down the back, with Colleen Wrack and Peter Silk following closely. Three furlongs from home Peter Silk made a forward move, and he was on even terms with Native Son at the straight entrance. Haltway down the running Precious Metal raced to the lead; but Native Son held on in determined fashion, and both .he and Andy Wilson had the winner fully extended. Close ‘behind fine placed horses were Peter Silk and Shrewdy. The winner had little form to recommend him, and he beat a poor field. He is open to improvement and may win more races. Native Son ran his best race and fought on gamely; and Andy Watson owed his third placing to a very lucky run on the rails in the last 50 yards. Peter Silk had every chance, but failed badly in the straight. Shrewdy was the unlucky horse of the race, for he twice met_mterference, and lost a lot of gr6und._But for this he would have troubled Precious Metal. Colleen Wrack showed speed in patches, but broke and mterferred with Shrewdy. A Race for Non-Stayers

A very slow pace in the first mile of the Timaru Cup resulted in the field being well bunched; but it did not provide a test of stamina. Recess won on her sprinting ability. _ 1 Prairie King and Grace McElwyn were smartest to find their feet, and they led past the stands, followed by Peter Locanda, Bingen Palm, Waress, Recess, and Agile. The field dawdled along for another round, at which stage Agile, who had lost ground at the start, had joined Little Nelson in the lead, the next being Prairie King, Peter Locanda, and Grace McElwyn. Half a mile from home Recess made a move to the leaders, and with Little Nelson and Peter Locanda was first into the straight. She cleared away from her field at the distance and, doing her best, she hung on to defeat Peter Locanda, Bingen Palm, and Battlefield. The latter pair finished very fast. The winner was handicapped to do 4min SOsec, and on a good track she registered 4min 41 l-ssec, which shows the muddling pace at which the race was run. A brilliant sprinter. Recess has yet to prove herself a stayer, although this is her second victory over two miles. It was a popular win, although Recess was not greatly fancied on the machine. Peter Locanda had every chance and enjoyed all the best of the running; but he was distinctly lucky to defeat Bingen Palm and Battlefield, both of whom made up a lot of ground over the last two furlongs. Little Nelson faded out badly after helping to make the pace, and Grace McElwyn also gave a disappointing display. Sea Gift broke more than once and met interference: but she showed fine speed at intervals A Brilliant Three-year-old The Seadown Handicap provided an outstanding display by the three-year-old Pot Luck, who, with six furlongs to go, was a long way behind the leaders. and travelled at a great rate over the last half mile to win in hollow fashion.

Hidden Charm was quickest to begin, and with Loretta, Southern Smile. Cadiz, and Oversight handy, He was one of the leading division for six fur-

longs. At this stage, the order was Southern .Smile, Hidden Charm. Loretta, Cadiz, Oversight, Llewellyn’s Pet, and Colene Parrish; and Pot Luck was still a long way back. Three furlongs from home Hidden Charm w as in front; but Pot Luck put in a brilliant burst and was on. level termj with the leader as the run home was started. From then on the result was never in doubt, and the three-year-old won easily, It was one of the best performances for a three-year-old ever witnessed on the course. He is an exceptional pacer, and will do even better as he gains age and experience. At present he is rather slow to begin. Hidden Charm paced a fine race and was fighting on like a game racehorse. Colene Parrish was not prominent until the later stages, and she finished well. Oversight paced a solid race, and so did Cadiz, Southern Smile, who will do better, Loretta, Double Great, and Casanova, but all i were outclassed by the winner. ‘ The Futurity Stakes . The first race for the Timaru Futurity Stakes attracted a field of 11 well-trained two-year-olds, and it served to show a fine young racehorse in Southern Chief, who scored a decisive victory. There was little delay at the start, and though Southern Chief lost several lengths when the barriers were released, he was quickly into hiS stride and had displaced Becky Direct in the lead when two furlongs had been covered. Southern Chief carried on down the back stretch from Loyal Pat, Becky Direct, Peter Bee, and Parisienne. In the straight. Southern Chief came away to win like an experienced racehorse. The time, 2min 19 3-ssec, represented a very good effort pn the part of the baby pacer. Loyal Pat was well supported, and he put up a fine performance to finish second. Becky Direct began smartly, blit faded out towards the end; and a good deal of promise was shown by Parisienne and Effle Parrish, All three are good looking fillies, and appear likely winners when more matured. Rapidian’s failure to leave the mark was disappointing to his numerous backers, but he Showed speed at times, and will do better as a result of his experience, A neat little gelding in Royal Grattan also lost ground at the barrier, rise; but he is a smart, nippy pacer with good prospects. > Discord’s Double . Penalised 36 yards for her earlier win, Discord gave another fine display of trotting in the Teinuka Handicap, and won narrowly from Prince .Harvester.

Most of the running was made by Bosun, Tyrone Lass, and Sphinx, while Discord was always nicely placed. Prince Harvester made a mistake two furlongs from homeland at-this stage Discord put in a fast run, She wasin front 100 yards from home when Prince Harvester made another effort, and was only beaten a head. It was a splendid race until the last 100 yards, when the first and second placefillers drew out, i Discord is rapidly developing, and both performances were good. Her driver, R. J. Rapley, showed a lot of patience and good judgment, and under a bard drive. Discord kept to her work like a champion in the making. Prince Harvester trotted another fine race, and a break two furlongs from home did not help. him. He did not lose a great deal of ground and was in a fighting position right to the finish; Sphinx gave his usual plodding exhibition, but lacked speed when it was most required. Bosun for once in a while trotted steadily, and, with Ohinemutu and Tyrone Lass, was in a good position throughout. Supertax Shows Speed

The Washdyke Handicap provided a great race from start to finish, and while Graham Direct was a warm favourite and was in front at the distance, he failed to withstand the challenges of Supertax, Craganour, and several others

The start was uneven, and while Willow Wave was badly left, Craganour also lot a lot of ground. Graham Direct began smartly, and with Waress and Sylvia Sydney he led past the stands with Peter Locanda and Homeward handy, and Craganour, who had been ; lucky to secure a run on the rails, also prominent. When the-run home was begun, Graham Direct was in front, with Supertax also putting in his claim. The latter was in Command of the position 50 yards from the post; but he had to be hard driven to defeat Craganour and Willow Wave. It was a splendid effort on the part of Supertax, who was forced to cover some extra ground. He was turned out in capital order, and was admirably handled by R. Towriley, jun. Craganbur and Willow Wave would both probably have beaten Supertax had they begun properly, but both tend to stand on the mark, Graham Direct did not finish with the dash expected, and possibly he was, in need of a race to sharpen him up. He left the mark correctly end had every chance. Willow Wave’s finishing run was sensational, and with better barrier manners he would soon be in the highest class. At present he is most unreliable. Peter Locanda again gave a solid display,, but met high grade horses. Reporter was prominent for the greater part of the journey, end Waress ran her best race for some time. Homeward improved on some of her previous performances, M. Holmes Again Successful

Golden Mist carried 492 tickets and the Ovei sight-Prince Roydon bracket one less iu the Wairiti Handicap, but the winner was Jean Drusus, who gave M. Holmes his second success during the afternoon. Before the field had travelled a Quarter of a mile, Lady Antrim, Cadiz, Jean Drusus, and Golden Mist were showing the way to a bunched field, prominent in which were Wee Wrack, Prince Roydon, and Forte*. Down the back stretch, Wee Wrack ran closer to the leaders, and as the field swept into the. straight, Cadiz, Golden Mist, and Jean Drusus were the, leaders. At the distance post the. last-named shot to the front and quickly disposed of Cadiz, but she had to be driven but to-beat Colene Parrish, who finished fast. Golden Mist also hung, on gamely. Cadiz, Casanova, and Oversight followed the placed horses. Jean Drusus scored an overdue win, although she had previously , run several very good races. She enjoyed all the best of the running, and stayed on gamely. Colene Parrish, lor the second time during the afternoon, filled ,a .minor place, and-in each case her finishing effort was impressive. Golden Mist showed a lot of speed and Cadiz was in front until real business started.. Prince Roydon and Oversight were not prominent at the half-mile post, and were then set a hopeless task. Cantata disappointed, Wee Wrack failed to run on, , and Lady Antrim soon had had enough.
