When Alexander McAlpine was charged in the Supreme Court' with the attempted murder of John Stephen Walsh, at Ohakune on December 5. the Crown Prosecutor, Mr N. R. Bain, intimated that accused had been under observation in the Porirua Mental-Hos-pital since the preliminary hearing, and the medical superintendent, Dr. G. B. D. Hart, and Dr. D. Hunter were prepared to certify that accused was insane, and did not understand'the nature of his action. . A jury was empanelled to hear the doctors’ evidence, and returned a verdict'that. McAlpine was so insane that he was unable to plead. His Honour Mr Justice Ostler ordered that McAlpine be detained- in a mental hospital at the pleasure of the Minister for Justice.
