N.Z. HORSES IN ACTION A MISSING BOOKMAKER (yaOM ODB OWK COBBBSPOKDSHT.) • SYDNEY, February 6. Betting at Randwick last Saturday seemed to be on an extra heavy scale. That was unfortunate for the bookmakers, who had much the worst of leader of the paddock ring subsequently claimed that he had lost £3250 during the afternoon. A stir was created by the disappearance from hfe / stand on the flat of a bookmaker who had been operating in that section, for 20 years. Subsequently his bag containing sixpence and a number of tickets was founn m a m ° to f r5 s since been announced that all liabilities will be met by this bookmaker. Cereza, starting at odds on, scored an easy win in the Adrian Knox Stakes. Both she and Fair Diana, who was ruflner-up, are daughters of Heroic. Consistency was rewarded when Mr Kerry won the Anniversary Handicap for Mr W. T. Brunton, It was a case of the last stride deciding the result. Mr Kerry scored by half a head from Viceroy (Limond—Jewel of. Asia). Curator, /who shared favouritism with the winner, was a moderate third. Then came Limbohm, Journal, and Miss Nottava. \ ... In a recent letter, referring to Billy Boy’s second at Warwick Farm, I expressed the opinion that this Pantheon colt Who is bred on . Peter Pan lines, was a 1936 Derby hope. He was sent out a slightly better favourite than Barramul for the Havilah Handicap and won most decisively from that Caledon colt. Billy Boy belongs to Miss Lorna Doone, who has raced only two other horses, Sylvandale and Jovial Son, and who must certainly be accounted a lucky owner. M. McCarten, who is having such a great season, had to ride a wonderful finish to win the Novice on Stalwart, a Magpie three-year-old who, according to McCarten, is one of the greatest "loafers” he has ever ridden. Stalwart, raced by Mr W. H. Mackay, jun,, carries the colours made famous by Gloaming’s rival, Beauford. A Big Win A big coup was. brought off with Lone Raider in the Phillip Handicap, a seven furlohg which closed the day. His price shortened 14 points during - the wagering, and he duly landed the stake by a length and a half from a useful, sort in Autoland. The giant Fernacre, who was favourite, was a neck. further back. Frank McGrath trains Lone -Raider for Mr H. S. Cornfoot, and the gelding had not started for nearly a year until Saturday. His last success had been gained in the Autumn Plate at Riccarton in April, 1934. Anyway there were two years’ profits in the haul made in the Phillip. Mr T. S. Kirkland won the six furlong Kurnell Handicap with Short Wave. A big plunge on Falstaff went astray in this. Autumn Racing The autumn trek to Melbourne has commenced and Sydney looks likely to he well represented in the Victorian capital. Whether Peter Pan will go is still in doubt. He appears rather backward in condition. , Weights for the Newmarket, Oakleigh Plate, and Australian Cup were made available on Sunday. Speculators on Monday completed Newmarket and Cup doubles with Marabou, but he was withdrawn from the race on Tuesday. 'Marabou is reported to be all right so evidently it is merely a matter of Mr Kellow having other plans for him. Feldspar, who has injured a pastern, has also been taken out of the Gup, ■ , , Closing Time won the six furlong Eclipse Handicap in good style at Ascot (Melbourne) last Saturday. He conceded lib to Heros and 121b to Great Legend. Ashley Reed rode him. Sale of Thoroughbreds A keen demand for thoroughbred stock was revealed at a sale held by William Inglis and Son at Randwick on Monday. ~ Top price was 1000 guineas, which Mr W. Henderson gave for the five-year-old Magpie gelding Windbird, Fair Diana, runner-up in the Adrian Knox Stakes, became the property of Mr S. W, Philips for 625 guineas. Money Spi (Paper Money—Spionnetta) went at 160 guineas to Mr R. Woods. Deputy Ruler (Chief Ruler—Duchess Eudorus) was sold for T7O guineas to Mr H. W. Rudd, and Mr G. Tyson had to go to 300 guineas to secure Lady Eleanor (Chief Ruler—Time Will Tell). The Australian Cup winner. Topical, was sold for 210 guineas to Mr F. Russell. Much smaller prices were the rule at the dispersal sale of Mr J. J. Leahy’s Ardsley Stud at Bathurst on Tuesday. There was, however, a fair demand for brood mares by Rossendale. The stallions Silverado and Leighton attracted no bidding, but Air Balloon found a new owner in Mr T. G. Doyle, of Sydney.
