DOMINION SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS

CANTERBURY TEAM CHOSEN

For the first time in nine years Canterbury will be represented at the Dominion surf life-saving championships, which will be decided- at Dunedin this month. During this period the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association has not taken part in the competitions, mainly because of a difference of opinion with the New Zealand Stirf Association about the rules for the Nelson Shield comptition, the chief event at the championships. This year, however, the rules have been altered, so that they are now acceptable by the Canterbury association. Since 1926 individual clubs in Christchurch, however, have entered teams. The following team has been chosen to represent the Canterbury association by the selectors, Messrs A. I. Cottrell, H. S. Feast, and D. V. Wilsun:—E. A. Allen (instructor), D. H. Symes, L. J. Moorhouse, A. T. Dalton, M. R. Rattray, J. A. Young, M, T. Butterwick, and G. S. Cooper. One will be an emergency.

CLUB TRANSFERS

RESTRICTIONS TO BE MADE

Recently two members of the North Beach Life-saving Club who had been chosen to represent their club in an inter-club team event resigned the day before the competition to join other clubs. This action was discussed at a meeting last night of the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association, and strong disapproval was expressed. It was decided to take steps to amend the rules so that such actions would be prevented. % Mr D, V, Wilson said that two members of the club he represented—North Beach—had advised the club' a day before an inter-club competition was to be decided, that they were resigning and would not be able to take their places in the team to represent the club in this They had then applied to other clubs for membership. ’ The matter was serious, for if such actions were allowed, corrupt practices might easily creep into the sport. It was essential, too,'that the clubs should be protected. Mr W. 'H. Benson supported Mr Wilson. He said that there had once been a rule that a member of a club could not compete for another club In the same season. “At present there is every inducement for this beastly pothunting," he said. The president, Mr A. I. Cottrell, said there had been a rule that would have prevented the action they !were discussing, but it was not among the existing rules. He suggested that a rule should be added that would give protection to the clubs. It was agreed to refer the inatter.to the competitions and rules ‘sub-com-mittee, with a recommendation that it draft a rule to prevent'transfers during the , SeasOn without the consent of the association being obtained.
