NORTH CANTERBURY

KANGIORA PERSONAL A motion expressing appreciation of the services rendered to the county by Sergeant P. Cessldy while he was in charge of,the police district of Rangiora, was passed at a meeting of the Rangiora County Council yesterday. A letter will be sent to him wishing him the best of good wishes in his retirement. Mr W. Stalker (chairman) was appointed yesterday to represent the Rangiora County Council, at a conference of county councils in Canterbury called by the Waimate County Council to take place at Ashburton ■on October 14. The conference • will discuss ways and means of eradicating gorse by tree planting and bringing such lands into production. Representatives from the Crown Lands, Forestry, Agriculture, and Unemployment Departments will be present. Comity Council

The Rangiora County Council met yesterday. There were present:— Messrs W. Stalker (chairman), C. Rands, W. Smith, H. Tallott, W. Macdonald, A. Mcintosh, and S. G. Dallev (county clerk). The financial statement showed that there was a debit balance of £34246s 3d. Payments for August totalled £l2Bl 6s 9d and receipts were £BOS 4s 6d. Among the receipts for the month were: Rates £325 18s 9d, hospital rates*£l79 9s 2d, river trust rates £75 4s 7d, Unemployment Board wages refund £lls 19s 6d. The traffic inspector reported that two motor drivers' licenses had been issued during the month. He had been in touch with the Canterbury Automobile Association about the erection of direction signs on roads. The bitumen on the Rangiora-Woodend road was breaking up in places, j The county clerk submitted a report on the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties' Association held recently at Wellington. The foreman (Mr C. L. Dalzell reported that the Waikuku road bridge had been top-decked and the approaches on either end clayed and shingled. He stressed the necessity of scarifying the following roads to keep them up to highway standard: Part Waikuku Beach, part Kaiapoi Beach, Main Drain from Skew bridge to Southbrook, Oxford from Fernside to Bannie's Hill. The work would take about four weeks.

It was decided to call tenders to clean the Cam river from the dairy factory to Mcintosh's bridge, a distance of about three miles. The Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association was granted permission to erect a fence round the triangular portion at the entrance to the Pines Beach Domain. It was stated that ornamental trees and shrubs would be planted in the enclosed area. A grant of £2O was given to the Canterbury Progress League. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, wrote acknowledging the resolution passed at a recent meeting of the council about the subsidy en expenditure on all roads other than main highways. He stated that the terms of the resolution had been noted and he would be glad to arrange for them to receive, careful consideration of the Government. Mcintosh Shield Football

The annual fo6tball match between the boroughs of Rangiora and Kaiapoi In the Mcintosh Shield competition will be played at Kaiapoi to-day. The Rangiora team is as follows: J. Power, F. Smith, J. Smith, W. Taylor, J. Pawsey, R. James, W. Saunders, J. Bury, F. Devlin, L. Moran, D. Prestney, V. Corbett, L. Douglas, A. Tully, H. Feary. Unemployment Allocations

A slight decrease is noticeable in the number of men in the Rangiora district to be employed on the Ashley river protective works next week compared with the figures for this week. The number of men on the No 5 scheme on the other hand will be increased next week. The figures for next week are as follows (those for this week being in parenthesis): Sustenance 38 (39), No. 5 scheme 31 (29), Ashley river works 169 (171). Sports Attractions To-day

The main sports attraction on Dudley Park this afternoon will be the representative football match between the junior team of the North Canterbury Rugby Football Sub-Union and the third grade team of the Canter*, bury Rugby Union. The only other fixture on the park will be a, hockey match between a team from the Rangiora Women's Hockey Club and a team of junior bOys from kaiapoi. The Rangiora Golf Club will play a home and away match with the Richmond Hill Club (Christchurch).

WAINUI , The Domain Tennis Club held a dance in the hall to end their euchre parties. The women's aggregate for the series was won by Mrs T. Robinson, and the men's by Mr C. Hopkins. Mr T. W. Warner, on behalf of the committee, thanked all who gave prizes for the different evenings. Music for dancing was played by Mr R. H. Stewart, and Mr Warner was master of ceremonies. SOUTHBROOK At a meeting of the library committee, Mr H. Fraser presided over a full attendance of members. Arrangements were made for the series of socials which are to be held to raise funds. It was announced that the socials will commence at the Coronation Hall on Saturday, September 21. Forty-eight new books have been purchased at a total cost of £5 12s. Hockey The hockey club are entering three teams in the six-a-side tournament to be held at Methven next Saturday. CLARKVILLE A number of residents from , feast Eyreton visited the Clarkville Hall and played a return card match against the Clarkville players. The Clarkville players gained the highest number of points. Supper was followed by dancing to music played by Mrs G. Mcintosh. Fortnightly Social There was a good attendance at the fortnightly, social held in aid of the hall funds. The points prizes resulted:—Mrs W. Robson 1, Mrs G. Mcintosh 2, Mr Alf. Cherry 1, Mr O. Cherry 2. A dance followed. Music was played by Mrs G. .Mcintosh (piano).

Women's Division At the monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mrs A. J. Rich presided over a good attendance. Competitions for the afternoon resulted:— Best bloom in garden: Miss Doris Holland 1, Mrs Rich 2, Mrs C. Ashby 3., Sponge sandwich: Mrs G. Hassall 1, Mrs Ern. Giles and Mrs T. Basketball • An enjoyable game of basketball was played at Clarkville, when the single women played the married women of the district The match was won by the single women, the score being 25-U. Afternoon tea was served in the hall.

AMBERLEY . A public meeting of women interested in the organising of a social to commemorate the opening of the new Town Hall was held, and a committee was appointed to confer with the hall committee. At a subsequent meeting at which Mr J. McLean 'presided, it was decided to hold the opening ceremony on October 18, and to invite the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon. G. W. Forbes, to perform the ceremony. The programme finally decided upon is as follows:—2 p.m., opening ceremony and social function, followed in the evening with a grand ball. OXFORD

Picture Show "Lily of Killarney" is a musical and dramatic romance of Ireland which has had a good reception everywhere. John Garrich and Sim Malo are in the principal parts.

Women's Division The monthly meeting of the Oxford branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, which was to have i been held on Tuesday, had to be post- I poned, because of the stormy weather, and will be held next Tuesday, when Dr. H. T. J. Thacker will give an address, Hut Burnt A hut and storeroom on Mr H. G. Cross's Warren property was recently destroyed by fire. The building had not been used, and contained two tons of chaff and other produce. The cause of the fire is a mystery. Working Men's Club The annual social of the Oxford. Working Men's Club was held in the town hall on Wednesday evening. Enjoyable dance music was played by Fred. Whitelaw's band, and extras by Mrs L. Paterson, Mrs G. C. Mehrtens, and Mr E. Knowles. The lucky spot was won by Miss Bernice Youngman and Mr W. Palmer, and the Monte Carlo by Miss Jessie Carpenter and Mr Baring. During the evening songs were given by Mr C. A. Denton. CUST On Thursday afternoon the members of St. David's Presbyterian Church held a spring fair in the Public Hall. The Rev. N. H. Finch declared the fair open. Songs were sung by Mrs Stevenson (Oxford). The winners of competitions were: Handbag, Mrs Sneddon; cushion, Miss M. Richardson; No. 1 cake, Mrs Henderson; No. 2 cake, Mrs L. Campion; rug, Mrs Eaglesome; bantams, Mr M. J. Forbes; tray, Beverley Amyes; d'oyly, Miss M. Finlay.

OHOKA The dance and card evening given by the Anglican Church in the Ohoka Hall drew quite a fair attendance of supporters of the church and local residents. Music for the dance was played by Mr and Mrs C. A. Cook (violin and piano), with extras from the visitors. The Rev. C. L. Sparrow, the vicar of the parish, in thanking visitors for their attendance, referred to the continuous way in which the church's functions had been attended by bad weather. BROADFIELD The monthly meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Broadfleld schoolroom. Mrs W. Boyle presided. It was decided to hold the second birthday party on Friday, October 11. , Winners of competitions were as follows:—Plate of pikelets: Mrs F. Nieman 1. Mrs R. Wheeler 2. SHEFFIELD The members of the Sheffield Drama Circle met in the Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association's rooms to read and rehearse the plays which have been chosen for the coming season. Mr J. D. Tooms presided, and the plays, "The Map," "Bureaucrats," and "Love Will Find a Way," were rehearsed under the direction of the Rev. L. Rothwell. *Eensiif, Club ■ • The annual meeting of the Sheffield Tennis Club was held in the pavilion in the domain on Thursday evening. The president, Mr H. C. Townshend, occupied the chair. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr Robert Colthart, who had been patron of the club for a number of years, and also the relatives of Mr Alfred Alderson, who had been an active member of the club. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l4 5s 7d. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr William Deans; president, Mr H. C. Townshend; vice-presidents, Messrs A. W. Adams and G. H. Judd; captain, Mr Lindsay Melrose; vicecaptain, Mrs J. D. Tooms; secretary and treasurer, Mr Fred Austin; delegates to sub-association, Messrs L. Melrose and A. Adams; committee, Mrs L. T. Wright, Misses H. Lilley, D. Judd, Ida Innes, Messrs A. Petrie, A. Adams, L. P. Hawke, and K. Adams. Six new members were proposed. It was decided to hold a working bee on September 21 and to have the opening day on the following Saturday.

It was resolved to hold a singles tournament, under the same conditions as last year, to play for the silver buttons presented by Miss Judd and Mr C. D. Sealey. The handicappers appointed by the club were Miss Ida Innes and Messrs Melrose and Sealey. It was decided to support the proposal of various sports bodies about the appointment of a caretaker for all the clubs, and that the sum of £2 be given for that purpose.

It was resolved to hold a competi:ion during the season to raise funds lor the club.

A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Judd for her past services as honorary secretary.

DARFIELD The monthly meeting of the Darfieid branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Memorial Hall. In the absence of Mrs D. McMillan (president) Mrs A. A. Stott presided. There was a good attendance. Votes of sympathy were accorded Mrs D. McMillan and Mrs R. G. Robinson in the death of relatives, and also with the relatives of Mrs McCausland (Kimberley). Two new members were welcomed. An appeal was made by Mrs J. D. Hall on behalf of the Christchureh branch of the Crippled Children's Society. . ' ! . The competition for the best-ironed shirt resulted: Mrs Price 1, Mrs Mi Jenkins 2, Mrs R. Gunn 3. Mrs G. C. Warren gave an interesting demonstration on sweet, making. The competitions for the next monthly meeting are a decorated vase of locally-grown flowers and a frock costing not more than 7s 6d. The hostesses were Mesdames M. Houston, M. Jenkins, R. S. Gunn, and Miss Eaves.

BARRY'S BAY The Oddfellows' Lodge held a dance in the hall to end their weekly card parties, and to present the aggregate prizes. The women's prize was won by Miss E. Stewart with 154 points, Mrs A. V. Stewart being runner-up with 150 points. The men's prize was won by Mr Reuben Stewart, with 117 points, who has won two years in succession, the runner-up being Mr D. Renner, with 112 points. Music for dacing was played by Mr R. A. H. Stewart. Mr T. W. Warner was master of ceremonies. TEMPLETON As the Templeton Social Club has decided not to continue the Saturday night dance any longer, the Anglican church members have decided to continue them, beginning to-day. i Cricket Club Meeting I- The annual meeting of the Templeton Cricket Club was held In the TemI pleton Public Library recently. ! Hoskins, who has been appointed headmaster of the Woodend School, was given a public welcome in the hall on Wednesday evening. Mr H. Robertshaw, chairman of the school committee, addressed a few words of welcome to the guest of the evening and Mrs Hoskins, and, on behalf of the women of the district, Mrs H. Ellen also welcomed them. Mr and Mrs Hoskins each responded.. Music for dancing was played by Mfs D. Shea, with an extra by Miss Gwen Little. Mr Robertshaw was master of ceremonies.- • .

Songs were sung by Mrs A. D. Petrie, Mr Robertshaw, Mr W. Percy, and Mr J. McConaghey. Misses Laura Durie and Beryl Green sang a duet. Miss Mollie Tomlinson danced a tap dance, and Miss Sadie Quinn recited. Women's Division

There was a very large attendance at the September meeting of the Wood-sid-Waikuku branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Mrs H. Ellen presided. It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs F. Stott, who has been ill. Four new members were welcomed. Miss Gwen Little read a report of the girls' educational week in Christchurch.

Mr W. Toon, of Christchurch, gave a decidedly interesting address on th<s culture of gladioli, .and on growing them for show purposes and staging them at shows. He also suggested that members should concentrate on growing certain varieties of hardy flowers for the Women's Division flower show, with the object of making an artistic display. The competitions resulted as followsJersey from wool provided by division: Miss Kitty Cox 1, Mrs J. Young and Miss Rinaldi, equal, 2. The judge, Mrs C. Eder, said that one of the exhibits had been disqualified, because, although it was the best in the class, it was made on fine needles, whereas coarse ones were specified. Vase of spring flowers: Mrs J. Ballinger 1, Miss Kitty Cox 2. Two entries in this class were also disqualified, because

they were bowls of spring flowers, not vases.

The hostesses were Mesdames H. Robertshaw, A. Quinn, P. and D. Robinson, and Miss M. Rinaldi.

MARSHLAND.

An enjoyable social evening arranged by the Marshland branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the hall on Thursday evening, the guests of honour being the president and members of the Waimairi branch of the Farmers' Union and their wives. The first part of the evening was devoted to a progressive euchre tournament, in which the prizes were won by Mrs G. Watson and Mr D. Goode, and the consolation prizes by Mrs Ching and Mr lan Morton (Belfast). Mr T. Morton (Belfast) won a special prize. After supper the president. Mrs Marks, expressed pleasure that the members of the Waimairi Farmers' Union had accepted the invitation to attend the social, and called upon Mr S. G. Farquhar, president of the Farmers' Union to give a short address on the work of the union. Games, competitions, and dancing were continued till midnight, the winners being Miss J. Wilson, Mr Pat Goode, Mrs E. Treleaven, and Miss W. Klesanowski. Personal Miss Mavjs Andrews has returned from Greymouth, where she competed with success in the dancing section at the recent competitions. Mrs Fountaine (Ashburton) is the guest of her, : daughter, Mrs W. P. Andrews. Miss Kathleen Quaid has returned from a visH to Timaru. Mrs S. H. Provost and Miss Beverley Provost have xfturned from a holiday visit to Waiau* where they were the guests of Mrs M. McDonald ("Glenbourne"). IRWELL Mr I* B. Coe presided at ,the annual meeting of the Irwell Cricket Club, at which' the balance-sheet showed a credit of £1 6s lid. Officers elected were:—President, Mr John Heslop, sen.; vice-presidents, Messrs K T. McMillan, H. O. Gardiner, and F. Wellstead; captain, Mr W. Doak; vice-captain, Mr W. Coe was thanked for the use of his paddock as a playing field., , LEESTON At the annual meeting of the congregation of the Leeston Presbyterian Church' the Rev. D. N. PryOr presiding, the balance-sheet showed a small credit Encouraging reports were presented on the work of the Sunday schools, missionary union, and Bible classes. Reference was made by the minister to the death since the last annual meeting of Miss Halliday and Mrs J. C. Young, and a motion of sympathy was carried. Mr E. Houston was re-elected to the management committee. It was decided to hold a meeting shortly to arrange for the annual flower show. A ."ecommendation was made to session that additional evening services should be held at Leeston.

At the monthly meeting of the Leeston School Committee, Mr R. Grant presided. It was decided to grant the use of the school buildings to the Canterbury Methodist Young Women's Bible Class Union for a camp at Easter, the applicants having undertaken to insure the buildings for the camp period. The headmaster reported a roll number for August of 115, and an average attendance of 110. Since the reopening last Monday the roll number had grown to 120. Arbor Day had been observed fey planting trees at the school, and, in conjunction with the Town Board, in High street. Advice had been received that Nurse Robertson was to take charge of the Leeston dental clinic and that treatment would probably begin in January. In the inter-schools games, Leeston girls had won the basketball competition and the boys had been runnersup in the football. The committee expressed its thanks to car owners who had provided transport for teams and also lor a visit by the children;*

Returned Soldiers' Association There was a good attendance at a social meeting of the newly-formed Banks Peninsula Returned Soldiers' Association, held at Duvauchelle. Mr H. J. Mobre presided.
