MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON BUILDING PROPOSAL CRITICISED The proposal of the Ashburton County Council to build new offices costing about £9900 was criticised at the meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Farmers* Union yesterday, when it was decided to send a remit to the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Union suggesting that the council be asked to give a fuller explanation on the advisability of raising a loan to build new offices at the present time. Mr S. H. Lill (Tinwald) said that before a poll was taken the counci? should explain the reason for building new offices. "I think it will be turned down by the ratepayers unless they do," he stated. Mr R. Houston, a member of the Ashburton County Council, said the council was divided on the question, which had bee: fully explained by the chairman of the council. The money for the building could be raised at a cheap rate of interest and would make very little difference to the rates. He did not know if the present was an opp6rtune time to carry

on with the proposal, and the size of the building was a debatable question.

Mr G. H. B. Lill (Willowby): If the council can show us that the hew building is necessary, that is a different matter, but I think the present building is good enough for many years to come. > . ; : ' Mr S. H. Lill moved that the council be asked for a : full explanation of the proposal. .'»,' .; Mr W. T. Lill, pf,Willowby, a for-; mer member of the Ashbsrton Cotinty Council, said that years ago the council went into. the question s of I.hew offices and a building estimated to cost £6OOO was considered sufficient. .It was proposed 1o place a.cbhiirete rtfol ; on the building. In ;thjat: case costly supports would be >sieteessaw!v' In acjcution. he thought it was a wrong principle in New Zealand wherethere, was a risk of earthquakes. Flat roofs were not successful in other public buildings in the town. Again, he understood that it was proposed to-spend £6OO on furniture. Were they going to provide a golden throne for the chairman, he asked. The present offices were well furnished, while the council chamber was. sufficiently well years to come. The amalgamation.of road boards was notmalcing one iota of extra work to; the 'council's clerical staff. If the council had brought this proposal before the last election, every member would have had to contest his seat. He .did.not consider there was any need to hurry over the building because he believed money would be cheaper than ;it wag to-day. . "I have not met any ratepayers who are sympathetic ,tc- the proposal," said the chairman (Mr J. H. Harper), who seconded the motion. The motion was carried unanimously. It was decided to suggest to the Mid-Canterbury Provincial Executive that the chairman of the Ashburton County Council be invited to attend the executive meeting to explain tne proposal. - Daffodil Day
