REQUEST THAT SENTENCE BE REVIEWED

MINISTER'S REPLY TO DEPUTATION (I'RBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, April 9. A request that the Minister for Justice should review the sentence imposed by the magistrate on Mrs J. Grant, at Christchurch, was made by a deputation representative of the New Zealand Working Women's Movement. Mrs Grant was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, and ordered to refrain from taking part in open-air demonstrations on a charge of trespassing at the Christchurch Relief Depot, and refusing to leave. Miss E. Farelly maintained in support of the request that the organisation was being penalised through the sentence. She contended that through Mrs Grant's action the conditions of the unemployed had been improved. In reply, the Minister (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) said Mrs Grant could have been fined or imprisoned, and he did not think she had been harshly dealt with. It was still open to her to address indoor meetings, and he felt that the decision of the magistrate should not be interfered with.
