GOLD LOST FROM AEROPLANE

SEARCH IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND SHIPMENT WAS INSURED LONDON, January 27. In spite of the bitter cold, hardy people in southern England to-day are searching for the gold lost from the Hillman Airways cross-Channel aeroplane, which, if it has not fallen into the Channel, may be in a backyard or a field along the route, plans of which are published in the newspapers. The police are treasure-hunting in Essex, Kent, and Sussex, but the route traverses lonely wooded country. The force of the fall may have buried the bars feet underground. The consignees state that the gold was insured and that it may be worth £20,000. The pilot says he felt weight shilling as the aeroplane approached Dungeness, but'he attributed it to the movements of the passengers. The "Daily Sketch" says a passenger, Mr E. Turle, declares while bumps' v. ere tossing the aeroplane he heard a crash and saw the floor of the luggage compartment rip open and packages, including the case of gold, slip through the hole. He fixes the scene as near Berck Aerodrome and the French coast. He thinks the gold fell into the sea or on to the seashore.
