OBSERVANCE OF ANZAC DAY

CROSSES OF REMEMBRANCE NEW PROPOSAL BEFORE RETURNED SOLDIERS "Crosses of Remembrance," in addition to the conventional poppies will probably be manufactured by the Returned Soldiers' Association for distribution on Anzac Day of this year. A letter from headquarters received by the Christchureh association lsst evening, set out a proposal from Dunedin for the distribution of these crosses for placing on "Fields of Remembrance" (as near as possible to the local war memorial) by members of the general public. The New Zealand Association advised that it had decided to grant permission to all local associations to manufacture sufficient crosses for local requirements, with the condition that these were made by disabled soldiers. The association stated that in many cities and towns in England, including London, "Fields of Remembrance" were arranged by branches of the British Legion on Armistice Day, and many thousands of crosses were placed in these fields by relatives and old friends of fallen soldiers. Many people could not afford to buy a wreath io deposit at the foot of the war memorial on Anzac Day, and it was* thought that many would welcome the opportunity to buy a cross of remembrance at a nomifial price. The letter was referred to the Poppy Day Committee. The following members of the executive were appointed as the Poppy Day Committee: —Messrs W. E. Leadley (convener), J. A. East, C. Miln, A. W. Mewton, T. L. Drummond, eri3 B. O. Priddis. The Anzac Day Committee was appointed as follows:—The Rev. F. T. Read (chairman), Messrs A. L. Emerson, J. S. Chisholm, A. W. Mewton, W. H. Darby, E. Orchard, and J. S. Chisnall. , It was decided to apply to the City Council for permission to hold Poppy Day on April 18.
