Four pit saws which were buried in the Tarawera eruption of 1886 were unearthed on the site of the Wairoa village, near Rotorua, last week, by a Mr Smith, who was digging on the spot where the old Te Wairoa Hotel once slood. The saws were six feet Jong and were in an excellent state of preservation.
An extension of the facilities whereby passengers by overseas vessels could send telegrams while on board in port was indicated in a letter from the chief postmaster to the Auckland • Chamber of Commerce last week. The service is to be extended to include the Mariposa and Monterey, a messenger being present on the boat for one hour after arrival and for one hour before sailing. During a discussion as to whether a notice could be posted informing the passengers of the presence of the telegraph agent, Mr J. A. C. Allum, a member of the council, pointed out that experienced travellers would look for the service, it being more or less universal.
