He had evidently followed his owners into the city to see the river carnival on Saturday night, and having lost them, was determined to steal a ride home. He sat under the seat of a Papanui tram, a shag-gy-haired dog of indeterminate breed. Discovered by the guard, he growled a refusal to get off the tram. The guard was insistent; the dog growled on a more menacing note. Not a passenger admitted ownership. Then the motorman took a hand in the proceedings. Approaching the dog, he threatened him with the motor-handle. The dog burst into furious barking. Finally both guard and motorman retired defeated, and the dog quietly continued his ride. At the Leinster road stop he quitted the tram, very unostentatiously, and slipped off into the darkness. . "'
