One of the largest catches of fish, ever landed at Mew Plymouth, and certainly the largest this year, was landed at New Plymouth recently by the launch Gallileo. The fortunate fishermen were Messrs F. Bain and J. Williams. The Gallileo landed nearly a ton and a half of fish, comprising 500 schnapper and 600 flounder. The schnapper were caught on hand-lines off Kawhia. Describing their experience, the fishermen stated that there were millions of fish on the grounds they worked. It was no effort at all to secure the fish —all that was necessary was to drop a line over the side. They could have caught considerably more, but a ton and a half was all they could readily dispose of at New Plymouth. The Gallileo encountered some very heavy weather on the voyage from Kawhia, having to punch home in. the teeth of a howling westerly. On one occasion she was hove-to for six hours, it being almost impossible for her to make any progress against head winds and seas.
Once used as the site of a quarantine hospital for lepers, Quail Island, in the upper reaches of Lyttelton Harbour, is now to let. The island has an area of 172 acres, and the minimum annual rent asked by the Government is £7O. There is no permanent water supply, but water is conserved in dams, concrete tanks, and a concrete reservoir, and is laid on to troughs in some of the paddocks. It is estimated that the carrying capacity would be about 150 ewes, 10 to 12 head of cattle, and two horses.
