WOOLSTON BAND
ACTIVITIES IN AUSTRALIA ' According to cablei messages received from Mr E. J. Estall, conductor of the Woolston Band, the passage to Sydney was very rough. Several practices were held on board ship, but were poorly attended, owing to seasickness. The band's activities in Australia have included an open-air concert at Manly, and a broadcast from 2J3L. They also made several records with the gramophone company. At present the band is quartered at Ballarat, and will remain there until the Centenary Band Contest begins on November 1. During the interval, two practices will be held daily, and under the direction of an Australian drum-major, extra attention will be paid to the quickstep. The total subscriptions received to date for the Woolston Band Centenary Fund amount to £I2BO, while the total estimated cost, fhclusive of the cost of the appeal, is approximately £1666. This leaves a deficiency of £386, and the committee would be grateful if intending contributors would forward their donations to the treasurer, Mr A. L. Cropp, P.O. Box 472, Christchurch.
