ELECTRICITY CHARGES
TO THE EDITOB OI THE PBESS. Sir, —Now that Waitaki has "delivered its power," would it be too much to ask for a still further reduction in the electricity rates for domestic use? Christchurch, I know (thanks to Mrs McCombs), has the cheapest rate in the Dominion, but the use of electricity for cooking is still beyond the reach of the woman with a family and an average wage on which to keep house. It is only by scheming that I can keep my electricity account round about £2 for the two months. To be able to use the oven daily would be wonderful, but quite out of the question. Why should this be when one reads of the profits made yearly by the electricity department. One family I know of has an electric stove and a gas stove, and uses gas, not for preference, but on account of the high cost of the former. Trusting this letter will be followed by others interested in the use of electricity in the home.—Yours, etc., E.N.F. October 29, 1934.
