HAROLD LOGAN. 2.36 3-5

WORLD'S RECORD BROKEN I A SENSATIONAL PERFORMANCE The New Brighton meeting on Saturday provided a sensation when Harold Logan, handicapped on 84 yards behind in the Avon Hanidcap, beat a field of high-class horses after pacing the mile and a quarter in 2min 36 3-ssec, establishing a world's race and grass track record for the distance. Harold Logan was eleventh favourite in a field of 13, and paid a good double figure dividend. He gave a perfect exhibition of pacing. When the barriers were released Harold Logan began very smartly and private watches made him travel the iirst 84 yards (his handicap) in exactly seven seconds, remarkable going from a standing start. The little champion put in a great burst of speed over the first quarter mile, at which stage lie was at the rear of a bunch that wai headed by Eureka Boy and included Somerby, Master Roy. Probationer, Silver de Oro, Craganour, Pcgaway, and Gold Tinge. Rollo and Kingcraft at this stage were behind Harold Logan, but the latter, with a great burst of speed ranged alongside and kept the little pacer company for two furlongs down the back. By the time the half mile post was reached Kingcraft had had enough and Harold Logan set out on another chase alter the leaders. Round the top turn Harold Logan passed Gold Tinge, bui | Pegaway had moved up into a better 1 position. A quarter of a mile from • home Harold Logan unwound another i burst of speed and 100 yards from the ; post he was in front. His driver, M, I Holmes, however, kept him going right j to the finish, and scored a win to the accompaniment of cheers seldom heard on the New Brighton course. It was a performance that thrilled the crowd J and proved beyond doubt the popularity of Mr E. F. C. Hinds's pacer. The previous record of 2m in 37sec was held conjointly by Indianapolis and Kingcraft, and was made in the Craven Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting in February last. Harold Logan owed his victory mainly to a very smart beginning, for with a quarter of a mile covered he was in touch with the field and his driver, M. Holmes, allowed him to have a breather without losing any ground. Another brilliant burst over the last quarter mile enabled him to take the lead and hold it to the finish. It was noticed that once he got to the front Harold Logan was quite content to pull up, and though Holmes did not punish him, he had to remind him that the race was not all over. The following sectional times will illustrate the brilliance shown by the champion pacer:—

First quarter mile .. Omin 31sec Six furlongs .. Imin 32§sec One mile ~ 2min 4sec Last mile .. 2mln sgsec Last half mile .. Imin Ogsec

Due credit must be given M. Holmes for a capital display of driving under Instructions from Mr E. F. C. Hinds, the owner. Harold Logan is a peculiar horse to drive, and though genuine and honest, is quite ready to stop as soon as he gets his head in front. Holmes understands him better than any other driver, and he has had good opportunities of studying the peculiarities of a wonderful pacer. Pegaway, who was a good favourite, went a capital race, and it seems likely that he will do better very shortly, possibly at Oamaru on Labour Day. Silver do Oro, after being nicely placed all the .way, finished with rare dash, and Somerby, after helping to set a solid pace, was beaten jn the straight. Rollo and Kingcraft never got close enough to the leaders to be dangerous.
